Overview:
This semester we will focus on the 8th century B.C. poet Hesiod. Our plan is to read the Theogony in its entirety as well as discuss the structure and interpretation of the poem. We will examine the mythical aspects of this work and also compare Hesiod to Homer. A study of this work will give us a good understanding of Hesiod's style and his social and religious concerns.

 

Goals:

· to read closely and analyze critically Hesiod' sTheogony

· to read scholarship on the Theogony

· to understand the historical and cultural context of the Theogony
