Participation (20%)

Class participation involves more than just attendance. It consists of getting to class on time, participating in drills, games, and discussions, and keeping pace with the rest of the class. Classroom work is a requirement, not an option. You may take 3 absences from the classroom during the semester without penalty — no questions asked, no explanation necessary. After three absences, each absence will lower the participation portion by one full letter grade (i.e. 2% off your final grade).

Homework (15%)

For almost every class, you will be asked to prepare a translation assignment, from Latin to English or vice versa. Even if we go over this assignment in class, I will collect it at the end of each session. You're free to correct your work as we go over it, but I also want to see your original answers. For this reason, all homework must be typed, unless you make special arrangements with me beforehand. I will accept homework up to 2 days late, for a penalty of 1 letter grade/day.

Quizzes (15%)

There will be at least one short (c. 15 min.) quiz on vocabulary and grammar each week, usually on Tuesday. After each quiz, you will have the option of correcting your errors for half credit.

Make-up policy: If you miss a quiz for any reason, it is your responsibility to make arrangements with me to make it up. There will be absolutely no make-ups after I have returned the graded quizzes (usually on Thursday), except under extraordinary circumstances by prior arrangement. You may still do "corrections" on the untaken quiz for half credit, however.

Presentation (10%)

In the second half of the semester, each of you will give a short (c. 15 min.) in-class presentation on some subject pertaining to the Satyricon, either a section of the work in translation or a relevant topic (e.g. entertainment, slavery, sex & gender, death), which will involve some modest secondary research. Dates & topics TBA.

Examinations (40%)

There will be 2 exams, a midterm and a final. The midterm will be given in class on Thursday, March 8. The final is scheduled for Monday, May 7 from 1:30-4:30 pm. Each exam is worth 20% of your grade.
