Sylvia Watkins Allen’s five sons gathered to surprise her husband, Bob, on his 80th birthday in their Florida home. Sylvia and I met for lunch several times this season, joined by Cilla Wheeler Vickery on one occasion. Cilla writes that Barbara Sidd Behan visited her (and Dunda) in Sarasota for 10 days in March. They enjoyed a Skidmore alumni evening at the Field Club, featuring the Bandersnatchers. I was being a hands-on grandmother in Glastonbury, CT, during much of Barbara’s visit but caught up with her before her return to Massachusetts.

After the death of husband Charlie, Barbara Cameron Forbes sold her “beloved little cape, complete with barn, pool, and garden shed.” Cam is now happily ensconced in Riverwoods, a retirement community in Exeter, NH.

Virginia Herzog Hein and husband David have a new address in Atlanta, GA. She reports, “We are aging like wine.”

After a successful back operation in March, Judy Gellert Berkley decided to enjoy a bit of travel: Ireland and France in July and a Mediterranean cruise in October—the latter an 80th birthday gift from her children.

Jean Dauer reminds us she lives near Boston, in “Red Sox Land.”

While visiting friends in Florida last winter, Maine resident Beverly Nicholson Adams missed three huge New England storms.

New London, NH, resident Jo Pfaltz Morse, who recently sold her property in Spain, spent her first winter in the US since 1973 and says, “I really missed the Costa del Sol sun.” Jo’s surprise 80th birthday party was attended by family and friends, including fellow nursing majors Mary Alice Emmons Maguire and Betty Haines Williamson, both of whom also reside in New London. The trio says, “Come visit us!”

After 40 years as a member of the local country club, Yvonne Salembier Horelik still pulls her own golf cart. Von continues to enjoy the abundant wildlife in eastern Connecticut—including some wild black turkeys and deer that appear on her lawn each morning.

On the West Coast, Do Dunkel Jerman is up to 13 holes-in-one (despite rain and mudslides limiting her spring golf outings). Do also enjoyed trips to Malibu, CA, where she took in football games and ballet recitals before heading back to her condo in Encinitas.

From Arizona, Avery Gale Jones sent a great picture taken during a visit with roommate Dorothy Rogers. “It was wonderful to see her. Her sense of humor is still intact.”

Mary Miller Solari and Virginia Miller Lyon took their kids and spouses to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, for two weeks in January. The group of 13 rented three condos on the beach. “It was great fun getting our families together,” notes Mary.

Gloria Biren Luria ran into roommate Gloria Wasserman Sachs at Art Basel Miami Beach last December. “I enjoyed renewing our friendship and seeing great art and special exhibits.”

Reports of former New Hampshire legislator Jane Pollard Kelley’s demise turned out to be “greatly exaggerated.” The Portsmouth Herald, in its coverage of a party Jane threw in March, erroneously reported that she had terminal cancer and satirically billed the event as “a fund raiser for her funeral bill.” In a subsequent interview in the Boston Herald, Jen confirmed that the party was meant as a send-up of recent state political scandals and that she “had no immediate plans to die.”

Consie Wingerter Cartmell attended a family reunion in New Jersey, highlighted by her children’s donation to Rutgers University of an eight-oared shell, named after their father.
