Betty Ewald Opie moved into an apartment near the home where she had lived for 39 years and cared for her husband until shortly before he died in October 2004. Betty’s daughter Susan Opie Smeragliuolo ’72 has three children who bring Betty much joy; daughter Jessie is pursuing a doctorate at the University of Virginia; and Abigail, another UVA grad, teaches at St. Andrews in Potomac, MD. Son David lives near Betty and has been a real support and help in moving. Betty plays bridge, attends theater performances, and is active in her church.

A note from Forrest Eggleston, husband of the late Barbara Blair Eggleston, told of the dedication of a new guest house at the Christian Medical College in Ludhiana, India, in honor of Barbara and the 33 years she worked to improve the lives of patients there. Among other duties, she ran the guest house. When my husband Paul and I lived in India, we occasionally visited them in Ludhiana, a small industrial city with few of the amenities available in Delhi and Bombay.

My grandchildren range in age from 5 to 16. Since I don’t get to spend much time with the four who live in Maryland, my very satisfying solution is to take them on trips, one on one. In late June I took a grandson on an intergenerational Elderhostel trip to Denmark to study the Vikings. Small-world department: there was a couple on the trip who have a home in St. John, VI, and know Sis Pflanz Frank well. Other than that, my time is spent doing volunteer work—something I did not have time to do when I had a job and was raising our boys while husband Paul was working out of town.
