Student minimum wage for the 2020-2021 academic year

Last semester, a student employment working group reviewed various aspects of student employment with a view to achieve cost-cutting goals while addressing concerns about the New York state minimum wage.  

The working group recommended to President’s Cabinet that the minimum wage for campus jobs be raised to $11.80 per hour. In addition, the group also recommended an annual earning cap of $2,400 per student, consistent with the amount allocated as the work-study component of financial aid awards.

The recommendations, specifically the earning cap, will be discussed at the next meeting of the Institutional Policy and Planning Committee (IPPC). In the meantime, given the need to start the hiring process for the fall semester, the financial aid office will soon open campus job postings for student employment at the proposed new minimum wage of $11.80 per hour, so offices can post job openings for sophomores, juniors and seniors.

Updates will be made to the Student Employment Handbook, including outlining additional student rights and the plan for re-evaluating student wage rates going forward.
