Get to Know Lauren Sisson

November 19, 2018

Lauren SissonLauren Sisson serves as a career counselor to the arts & design and media & communications career communities.

In prior years, Lauren counseled Skidmore alumni from a variety of interests.  Her knowledge of Skidmore alums positioned her to oversee initiatives such as Career Jam, Creative Thought (Net)works events, and the Career Advisor Network.

Lauren was recently interviewed by Haley English '19, Employer Outreach Assistant.

Tell me about yourself.

I graduated from SUNY Albany with a degree in Psychology.  I went straight on to grad school to pursue a Master’s degree in Professional School Counseling.  As luck would have it, the job market for school counselors in this area isn’t booming, so I leveraged my transferrable skills and found a career in higher ed.  When I’m not at Skidmore you can find me at home with my husband, son, 2 dogs and 1 cat.  I enjoy binge watching The Office, on repeat.  Seriously, I’ve lost count how many times I’ve seen the series.  I’m also in the process of trying to teach myself how to knit.  We’ll see how that goes.  Stop by sometime if you want to discuss the complexities of Dwight Schrute, if you have any knitting pointers, or if you want to swap dog photos!

What career communities do you serve?

Arts and Design and Media & Communications

What experience do you have working with these industries?

Since my time at Skidmore, I've been fortunate to work with alumni in all different fields.  With so many alums entering creative career paths, I am continuously building connection possibilities between students and professionals within the Skidmore network.

What program(s) are you most excited about this year?

I’m currently planning an event in LA that will be held over the winter break on January 13th.  We’ll have an afternoon of conversation with Nate Barr ’95 and Julianne Jordan ’91, moderated by Gordon Thompson.  Details are TBD, so keep an eye out!

The CDC will also host our third Media & Entertainment Tour in NYC this spring.  In the past, this tour has been sold out and has taken us to sites like the New York Times, Sesame Street, BET, and NBC, and have allowed students to network with leaders in the entertainment sector.  Stay tuned!

Favorite resource for this community?

The Career Advisor Network because networking plays such a big part in finding a career. The Skidmore alumni are extremely helpful and engaged and willing to help students.
