A special guest returns to Skidmore Dec. 4.

William Burke-White, considered one of the leading scholars on international law and global governance, will engage Skidmore students in an intimate discussion concerning potential careers around foreign policy, global human rights, international economic law, international institutions, international law, and more.

William, known as Bill, started his international studies at a young age by spending summers in China, the former Soviet Union, Europe, and South America.  Bill's mother is Skidmore Management & Business faculty member and Skidmore's Executive in Residence, Colleen Burke.

A Harvard undergraduate, Burke-White went on to earn his Master of Philosophy, International Relations and Affairs from Cambridge University.  He returned to Harvard for Law School, and to Cambridge again to earn his Ph.D. in Philosophy. 

Today, Bill is a Richard Perry Professor of Law and Inaugural Director of the Perry World House, an interdisciplinary global policy research institute at the University of Pennsylvania.  He is considered an expert on international law and global governance, and served in the Obama Administration from 2009-2011 on Secretary Clinton’s Policy Planning Staff. Mr. Burke-White was also principal drafter of the Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review (QDDR), Secretary Clinton’s hallmark foreign policy and institutional reform effort. He has written extensively in the fields of international law and institutions, with focus on international criminal and international economic law.  His current research explores gaps in the global governance system and the challenges of international legal regulation in a world of rising powers and divergent interests.

In Spring 2018, Burke-White met with Skidmore students and provided advice on accessing think tanks, conducting research, and tips for law school applications.  Attendees stated the hour spent with Bill was one of their favorites at Skidmore.
