Latino Culture, Heritage to Be Celebrated on Campus in November

December 8, 2006

Skidmore will celebrate Latino Heritage Month throughout November with a variety of activities designed to promote Latino culture and history. The following events are open to all interested and (except where noted) are free. Sponsoring organizations are RAICES and the Office of Student Diversity Programs.

A keynote speech by Nilda Medina will launch the celebration on Wednesday, Nov. 1. Recognized as one of the principal leaders of the Vieques struggle, Medina is a founding member of the Committee for the Rescue and Development of Vieques.

According to the web site 1000peacewomen.org, "Nilda Medina-Diaz has dedicated her life to the demilitarization of Vieques, a tiny Puerto Rican island that was used by the U.S. Navy for military exercises and weapons training and testing for 63 years. Largely through the work of the Committee for the Rescue and Development of Vieques, the United States closed its bases in 2003. In addition to coordinating the movement's civil disobedience organizational center, Nilda continues to play a crucial role in the post-Navy struggle to ensure that her community is informed and involved in their homeland's environmental cleanup."

The talk begins at 7 p.m. in Palamountain Hall, Room 202. A reception will follow. The event is co-sponsored by the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.
