Thoroughbreds Eye Fall Wrap-Up

December 8, 2006

The fall athletic seasons are winding down with post-season bids on the line this weekend for several teams.

The men's soccer team could win its first Liberty League regular-season championship with a road sweep of Hobart Friday, Oct. 20, and Hamilton Saturday, Oct. 21. The Thoroughbreds are 13-2 overall and 4-1 in league play. The team is ranked nationally for the first time in its history, entering the NCAA Division III poll this week at 24. Hobart, ranked eighth nationally, is 12-2 overall and 5-0 in conference. Unranked Hamilton is 8-2-1 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

The women's soccer team will be home this weekend with William Smith at 4 p.m. Friday and Hamilton at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Thoroughbreds (9-2-3 and 3-1-1 Liberty) would clinch a playoff spot with at least a tie in one of the games. Skidmore fell from the national ranking this week after losing 1-0 to Union and beating Utica 2-0.

The field hockey team, ranked 19th nationally, holds a 9-4 overall and 3-2 conference record. The Thoroughbreds are home at 4 p.m. Friday against William Smith and at 2 p.m. Saturday against Rochester. Victory over Rochester would clinch a playoff berth.

It's not post-season yet, but the volleyball team will host the Skidmore Classic Friday and Saturday. Skidmore (14-10) is trying to earn a bid to the 12-team NYSWCAA Tournament that will be played Oct. 27-28 at the College's Sports and Recreation Center. In pool play Friday, the Thoroughbreds will meet CCNY at 4 p.m and Colby Sawyer at 8 p.m. On Saturday, the team will play crossover matches at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The women's tennis team will conclude its fall season this weekend in the NYSWCAA championships at Cornell University. Skidmore is coming off a second-place finish in the Liberty League championships. The Thoroughbreds have won 14 NYSWCAA titles.
