Music Journalist Kim Osorio to Keynote Hip Hop Culture Week

October 16, 2008

Delivering the keynote address for Hip Hop Culture Week, music journalist Kim Osorio will speak on "The Truth About Women and Hip Hop" Thursday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. in Gannett Auditorium.

Recently named vice president at Global Grind, a Web site dedicated to hip hop, Osorio is the author of the just-published "Straight from the Source: An Expose from the Former Editor of the Hip Hop Bible." Former editor in chief of The Source magazine, Osorio filed suit against the magazine in 2005, alleging alleging sexual harassment, gender discrimination, defamation, retaliatory discharge, and maintaining a hostile work environment.

Other highlights of Hip Hop Culture Week, sponsored by the Hip Hop Alliance, include:

  • a documentary by Byron Hurt that examines the contrasting styles of manhood exhibited by Barack Obama and rapper/mogul Curtis Jackson, aka 50 Cent;
  • a presentation by Andre Carrington, professor of American Studies, on black womanhood in the 1960s and 1970s pop culture;
  • a panel discussion featuring students and faculty on "Hip Hop: Why Does It Matter?"
  • a hip hop dance and slam poetry contest.
