Women soccer players receive post-season kudos

December 11, 2008

Skidmore women?s soccer players Rachael Sushner ?09, Meghan Sleezer ?12, and Lindsay Schmitt ?11 were named to 2008 National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-New York Region team.

The Thoroughbreds ended the season with a 13-4-5 record that included the program?s first NCAA Division III tournament bid since 1998. Skidmore battled NCAA semifinalist William Smith to a 0-0 overtime tie in the Liberty League championship game and repeated the 0-0 overtime tie the first-round of the NCAA tournament against Western Connecticut State.

Sushner, a first-team selection, led the Thoroughbreds in scoring with 24 points on 10 goals and four assists this season, good for third in the Liberty League. The senior forward was also named first-team all-Liberty League and earned all-tournament team honors in the Liberty League championship tournament. She was a third-team all-region player in 2007.

Sleezer was named to the all-region second team after stepping into a big role as a freshman goalkeeper. She started 17 games in the net during the season and picked up a league-high 10 shutouts, allowing just seven goals in 19 appearances. Sleezer also earned Liberty League all-tournament team honors and was an all-Liberty League second team selection.

Schmitt, a third team member, was part of a tough Skidmore backfield that allowed just eight goals in 22 games. The sophomore defender also picked up a goal and four assists this season and was named to the Liberty League second team.
