Alumni comics return for 20th National College Comedy Fest

February 12, 2009

Two Skidmore graduates who carved out notable careers in the world of comedy will return to campus Feb. 13?14 to celebrate the 20th anniversary edition of the National College Comedy Festival: David Miner ?91, who founded the festival while at Skidmore as a theater major and member of the campus comedy-improv Ad-Liberal Artists; and Brad Morris ?98, a member of the famed Second City Chicago ensemble and founding member of comedy troupes the Reckoning, Stubs, and Uncle?s Brother.

The 20th anniversary will feature the festival?s now-traditional public evening performances, presented in Bernhard Theater by well-known comedy headliners. This year the stars are Saturday Night Live alumnus Tim Meadows with Uncle?s Brother at 11 p.m. Friday, preceded by Morris and the Reckoning at 10 p.m. New York City-based Derrick will perform at 10 p.m. Saturday.

Miner, who has recently earned considerable acclaim as a producer of the award-winning NBC comedy 30 Rock (2008 Emmy Award, 2009 Golden Globe Award), will take part in a Saturday panel discussion in Gannett Auditorium about careers in comedy along with Meadows, Morris, and other professional comedy actors. The session, which begins at 12:15 p.m., is one of a daylong series set up for the 18 teams of college comics coming to campus for the weekend to practice, polish, and perform their craft.

This year?s teams include Yale?s the Purple Crayon, Columbia?s Chowdah, Cornell?s Whistling Shrimp (one of three troupes from Cornell), along with funny people from Bates, Wesleyan, Emerson, Brown, NYU, Boston University, the School of Visual Arts, Trinity, and George Washington University. Skidmore will weigh in with the Ad-Libs, Skidomedy, and the Sketchies.

College groups will perform at 7 p.m. both nights. Tickets are $2 per person to the shows featuring college performers, and $5 per person to shows with the professionals. Tickets may be purchased in advance at Case Center or at the door. The National College Comedy Festival is the highlight of this weekend?s Winter Carnival, sponsored by the Freshman Class Council.
