Thoroughbred athletes eye end to a strong semester

Men's and women's swimming and diving competed at the Liberty League Championships this weekend in Rochester. Men's sophomore diver Doug Pilawa (Chardon, Ohio) won Liberty League Diver of the Year honors after becoming the first Thoroughbred to secure a Liberty League championship, winning both the 1-meter (418.95) and the 3-meter (454.10) diving events.

Women's basketball improved to 5-0 this week with victories over Hartwick and NYU. Senior Sharlyn Harper (New York, N.Y.) led Skidmore with 12 points in a 55-53 victory over Hartwick. On Thursday night, the Thoroughbreds defeated NYU, 65-51, after outscoring the Violets 30-14 over the final nine minutes. Senior Dana Leonard's (Cooperstown, N.Y.) 18 points led the way and classmate Amber Kinsey (Troy, N.Y.) added 13 points for Skidmore. The Thoroughbreds will try to remain perfect this week when they travel to Potsdam and the College of St. Joseph to wrap up the semester.

Men's basketball finished the week with a 2-1 record. On Tuesday, senior Jon Douglas (Amherst, Mass.) hit two 3-pointers to start the overtime period and junior Jeff Altimar (Medfield, Mass.) led five Thoroughbreds in double-figures in a 79-71 OT victory over Hartwick. Skidmore ended the weekend with a 102-74 win over Wells in the consolation game of the Hilton Garden Inn Invitational. Sophomore Gerard O'Shea (West Sand Lake, N.Y.) was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 8.5 points, 4.5 assists and five steals over the weekend. The 6-1 Thoroughbreds will take on Trinity at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11.

Ice hockey dropped close games this weekend to Bowdoin and Colby. Against Bowdoin, sophomore goalie Colin Bessey (Montclair, N.J.) allowed just one goal and made 34 stops. Junior Hunter Thayer (Shelburne, VT) and sophomore Alex Essaris (Dollard-Des-Ormaux, Quebec) each scored a goal and Bessey came up with 28 saves against Colby. Skidmore wraps up the semester on Friday, Dec. 11, hosting Castleton at 7 p.m. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
