Winter sports prep for end of season run

Women's swimming and diving competed Saturday at RPI. Senior

Sonia Segal-Smith (Needham, Mass.) finished second in the 1,000 Free and sixth in the 200 IM, while classmate Heather Friedman (Wayland, Mass.) took third in the 50 Free and seventh in the 100 Free. The men's and women's team also competed Sunday at St. Rose. Segal-Smith won the 200 Free and 500 Free; while Friedman won the 50 Free and took second in the 100 Free, and freshman Kristen Stearns (Torrington, Conn.) won both diving events. For the men, sophomore Doug Pilawa(Chardon, Ohio) took first in both diving events, earning another NCAA qualifying score, and freshman Jesse Adler (Chappaqua, N.Y.) finished second in the 100 Free and third in the 400 IM. Both teams will host RPI at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31.

Women's basketball finished with a 1-1 record this weekend, dropping their first league game of the season to St. Lawrence. In Friday's Clarkson victory, sophomore Christina Gargiso (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored 15 points off the bench and senior Dana Leonard (Cooperstown, N.Y.) added 11 points and seven rebounds. Against St. Lawrence on Saturday, senior Sharlyn Harper (New York, N.Y.) scored a team-high 12 points. The Thoroughbreds are now 12-3 overall and 4-1 in the league; they travel to Vassar for a 6 p.m. game on Friday, Jan. 30.

Men's basketball had tough losses to Clarkson and St. Lawrence this past weekend. Against Clarkson, sophomore Terron Victoria (Albany, N.Y.) led Skidmore with 16 points and junior Jeff Altimar (Medfield, Mass.) added 12 points. On Saturday, senior Jon Douglas (Amherst, Mass.) scored 13 points and sophomores Kyle Clark (New York, N.Y.) and Raoul Oloa (Yaounde, Cameroon) each had 12 points for the Thoroughbreds against St. Lawrence. Skidmore is 10-5 overall and 3-2 in the league and will face off against Vassar at 8 p.m. Jan. 30 in Poughkeepsie.

Ice hockey lost a pair of one-goal games to Amherst and Hamilton. Against Amherst, sophomore Tyler Doremus (Aspen, Colo.) scored and classmate Colin Bessey (Montclair, N.J.) allowed just two goals on 21 shots. On Saturday against Hamilton, freshman Julian Malakorn (Warwick, R.I.) scored his first collegiate goal and Bessey made 30 saves for Skidmore. Hockey is now 7-10 overall and 6-5 in league play and will return to action Friday, Jan. 30 at Connecticut College. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
