"Harmony for Haiti," which last Thursday night featured dozens of student and faculty singers and musicians in the first student-organized performance to take place in the new Helen Filene Ladd Concert Hall, raised $3540 to support Haitian relief efforts.

The funds will be divided evenly between Save the Children and Partners in Health, says Anni Satinover, a history and music double major from Weston, Conn. and a member of the Accents, which performed at Thursday's sold-out concert along with the College's other student a capella groups.

"It was amazing to see so many students in the audience," she says. "I think it's great that even though all of our lives are so removed from what's happening in Haiti, students still have perspective and are remembering that the world is a lot bigger than our daily lives at Skidmore."

"Music always has been a huge passion of mine," she says, explaining how the idea for the concert originated. "When I heard about the earthquake, I thought that putting on a concert could be a really meaningful way to donate. Singing with the Accents has been one of my favorite parts of my time at Skidmore so far, and I know the same is true for many other students who sing or play in groups on campus. Instead of all performing separately at the beginning of the semester we all thought it would be really inspiring to do one big concert together, and it was an incredibly rewarding experience."

Particularly helpful in organizing the event, she says, were Professor of Music Gordon Thompson; Shawn DuBois, Zankel's new technical director; Michelle Hubbs, coordinator of community service programs, and Robin Adams, assistant director of leadership activities.

"And the music department also was incredibly supportive in trusting us with the beautiful new music hall," she adds.

To contribute to the Haiti relief effort through the College, please make out checks to Partners In Health or Save The Children and send to Michelle Hubbs through campus mail. Cash donations will be accepted in Leadership Activities.
