This Monday: Zen Buddhism and the Anxiety of Modernity
Konrad Kyrushin Marchaj, Sensei and Abbot of the Zen Mountain Monastery (ZMM), will speak on "Zen Buddhism and the Anxiety of Modernity: The Practice of Meditation" this Monday, April 12 from 7 to 8:15 p.m. in Gannett Auditorium.
Immediately following his talk, Ryushin Sensei will lead a half-hour meditation session in Wilson Chapel beginning at 8:30 p.m.
Combining the Rinzai and Soto Zen traditions, ZMM is the main house of the Mountains and Rivers Order, an umbrella organization inspired by the teachings of Dogen Zenji. It occupies a 230-acre forested property in the Catskill Mountains.
A graduate of Albany Medical School, Ryushin Sensei was a pediatrician and a psychiatrist before entering residency under Daido Roshi in 1992. Known for his intellectually explicit, yet very personable take on the Dharma, he was among 80 people at 12 places of worship interviewed by in connection with a 2004 PBS project called The Congregation. A sampling of interviews conducted with Ryushin Sensei can be found here.
Ryushin Sensei's visit is sponsored by the College's Office of Religious and Spiritual Life in the Department of Religion and Asian Studies.
