Highly competitive week ends with multiple victories

Baseball ended a 3-1 week against 21 st ranked Rochester with a one-hitter from junior Nick Laracuente (Tenafly, N.J.) in the Thoroughbreds' 6-0 victory on Sunday.

During Saturday's win, senior Jake Mendell (St. George, Vt.) was 4-4 and classmate Anthony Ferri (Jersey City, N.J.) went 2-5 with a home run. In the opener on Sunday, Mendell hit a bases-loaded triple to tie the game and sophomore Brian Lowry (West Hartford, Conn.) drove in the game-winner in the top of the ninth. Laracuente dominated in the nightcap for Skidmore, giving up the lone hit with two out in the bottom of the seventh. Coming into the weekend, Rochester was 16-0 in the league before dropping three of four and having their 21-game league winning streak snapped. The Thoroughbreds are now 22-8 overall and 11-5 in league play; they host Middlebury at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 28. 

Softball posted a 3-1 record this week, highlighted by Saturday's walk-off victory against Union. Senior Arielle Manstein (Elkins Park, Pa.) hit a walk-off two RBI double in the bottom of the eighth to give Skidmore the edge, at 5-4. Sophomore Sam Crose earned the win, allowing four runs (three earned) in the complete-game effort. Earlier in the week, Crose tossed a no-hitter at MCLA; she struck out nine and walked none in the 3-0 win?her fifth shutout of the season. In game two against MCLA, senior Lauren Dinsdale (Harrington Park, N.J.) hammered a three-run home run in support of sophomore pitcher Abby Fuhrman (Amherst, Mass.) as the Thoroughbreds won 6-4 to earn the sweep.   Skidmore is 19-11 overall and 1-3 in league play. The team hosts Middlebury at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 28, in the final regular-season home games.

Men's lacrosse went 2-0 during the week, picking up a pair of Liberty League wins. In Thursday's 11-3 game against Hamilton, freshman Mike Holden (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) had three goals and an assist and classmate J.P. Sullivan (Floral Park, N.Y.) and senior Rob Lutin (Port Washington, N.Y.) each added two goals. On Saturday, the Thoroughbreds defeated Vassar 13-7 behind four goals and four assists from senior Cory Barkoff (Woodbury, N.Y.). Lutin had another strong game, posting four goals and two assists. Senior goalie Flip Bongaerts (New Canaan, Conn.) made 16 saves in net on the week.   The Thoroughbreds improved to 7-5 overall, 3-2 league, and will wrap up their regular season Sunday, May 1, at Clarkson.

Women's lacrosse went 1-2 this past week, defeating Clarkson and falling to St. Lawrence and No. 19 Amherst. Against Amherst, junior Lauren McCarthy (Ipswich, Mass.) had three goals and an assist while against St. Lawrence junior Kimberly Segalas (Stamford, Conn.) had four goals and classmate Lindsey Stavola (Montauk, N.Y.) posted two goals and six assists. In Saturday's 11-8 win, sophomore Lauren Madden (Huntington, N.Y.) scored four goals and Segalas added three goals and an assist to help keep Skidmore's playoff hopes alive. The Thoroughbreds' record is now 7-6 overall and 3-2 in the league; they host Middlebury at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 28.

Skidmore hosted this year's Liberty League Rowing Championships last Saturday at Fish Creek.   The Thoroughbreds' women's varsity eight finished second behind St. Lawrence. The Skidmore boat consisted of coxswain Katie Kenny, Elissa Nadworny, Maddie Demanche, Rachel Hutchins, Libby Gronquist, Dani VanDevoorde, Riley Johnson, Jenny Kauffman, and Korena Burgio. The men's varsity four was second behind Hobart. The Thoroughbreds will compete in the New York Championships May 1-2 in Whitney Point, N.Y.

Women's tennis took second in this year's Liberty League Tournament at St. Lawrence University.   The Thoroughbreds defeated William Smith 7-2 in the semifinals before falling to Vassar, 6-3 in the championship. Freshman Nataly Mendoza (San Francisco, Calif.) posted a 3-1 record in the tournament, including two wins at number-four singles. Junior Rachel Loeb (Greenwood Village, Colo.) and freshman Brittany Trimble (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) combined to win both their matches at doubles. Skidmore is at No. 1 Amherst on Saturday, May 1.

Men's tennis lost to Middlebury and Amherst this past week. Against Amherst sophomore Luke Granger (Allendale, N.J.) and freshman Alex Fromson (Newton, Mass.) each picked up wins at singles for the Thoroughbreds. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
