School records, OT wins highlight week in athletics

Christine Kemp '11, all-time leader
in field hockey assists

Senior Christine Kemp (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) became Skidmore's all-time leader in field hockey assists (52) during a 2-0 week for the ninth-ranked Thoroughbreds. Skidmore has won nine straight after Friday's 5-0 shutout at Vassar and Saturday's 7-2 win at RPI. At Vassar, senior Katie Potter (Rumson, N.J.) had two goals and an assist and junior Annie Rosencrans (Riverside, Conn.) added two goals. Against RPI, freshman Kelly Blackhurst (North River, N.Y.) tallied three goals and Kemp had two goals and an assist. Skidmore is now 10-1 overall and 5-0 in the league; they return to action at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, when they host Babson. 

Men's tennis put together a dominating performance at the Wallach Invite, winning five of six flights. Freshman Oliver Loutsenko (Bellmore, N.Y.) beat sophomore teammate Alex Fromson (Newton, Mass.) in the B Singles flight final, while freshman Jimmy Sherpa (West Vancouver, B.C.) won the C Singles flight and classmate Danny Knight (Ponte Verda, Calif.) won the D Singles flight. In doubles, Sherpa teamed up with senior Spencer Cheng (Wainbridge Island, Wash.) to win the A Doubles flight and Loutsenko and Knight won the B Doubles flight.

Volleyball posted a 4-0 record to win the Interleague Challenge at Union College. Senior Meredith Palmer (Montvale, N.J.) was named Tournament MVP and was joined by sophomore Carolyn Bottelier (Washington, D.C.) on the All-Tournament Team. Palmer finished the weekend with 58 kills and 15 blocks while Bottelier totaled 49 kills and 38 digs. The Thoroughbreds improved to 15-3 overall and host Middlebury at 7 p.m. Oct. 12 as part of Dig Pink, a nationwide event to promote breast cancer awareness.

Women's soccer finished the week 2-0, earning a pair of shutouts in Liberty League action. On Friday, junior Elena Stansky (Worcester, Mass.) scored 6:08 into overtime for a 1-0 win over St. Lawrence. Junior goalie Meghan Sleezer (Gloversville, N.Y.) made five saves for her second shutout of the season. On Saturday, Skidmore posted a 5-0 win against Clarkson behind two goals and an assist from sophomore Kelsey Yam (Longmeadow, Mass.). Junior Abby Benton (Vergennes, Vt.) added a goal and an assist and freshman Gab Lawrence (Yorktown, N.Y.) made seven saves for her first collegiate shutout. The Thoroughbreds improved to 2-1-1 in the league and 7-3-2 overall. They host Bard at 5 p.m. Oct. 12.

Men's soccer went 2-1 this week, highlighted by Saturday's overtime win at Clarkson. On Tuesday, senior Matt Kelsey (Cambridge, Mass.) had two goals to lead Skidmore to a 4-2 win over Southern Vermont. At Clarkson, freshman Orion Johnson (New York, N.Y.) scored 3:16 into overtime to give the Thoroughbreds a 2-1 win. Junior Sam Glickman (Port Washington, N.Y.) tallied the first goal in the win over the Golden Knights. Skidmore is now 6-5-2 overall and 1-2-1 in the league. They host SUNY Oneonta at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
