A winning weekend yields state tennis championships

Women's tennis won three singles and one doubles championship this past weekend at the 2010 Division III NYS Championships in Ithaca. Freshman Molly Nolan (Montauk, N.Y.) won the number-five singles title and teamed with classmate Keirsten Sires (Easton, Conn.) to win the number-three doubles bracket. Sophomore Nataly Mendoza (San Francisco, Calif.) won the number-three singles title with a come from behind victory and freshman Robyn Baird (Potomac, Md.) took home the number-six singles title. 

Field hockey has now won 11 straight after a pair of non-conference victories over Babson and Williams. Against the Beavers, senior Christine Kemp (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) scored two goals, while freshman Kelly Blackhurst (North River, N.Y.) had a goal and two assists in the 4-0 win. In Sunday's 5-2 win over Williams, junior Annie Rosencrans (Riverside, Conn.) scored twice and Kemp tallied a goal and an assist. The ninth-ranked Thoroughbreds improved to 12-1 and travel to St. Lawrence for a 3 p.m. start Saturday, Oct. 23.

Women's soccer posted a 2-0 record this past weekend and have won six straight games. In Tuesday's 1-0 shutout versus Bard, senior Lindsay Schmitt (Mendon, Mass.) scored the lone goal on a diving header off junior Catherine Kapustynski's (Darien, Conn.) crossing pass. On Saturday, Skidmore picked up a 2-0 win at Liberty League rival Union. Senior Erin Donnellan (Walpole, Mass.) and freshman Christine Bellotti (Medfield, Mass.) each scored and freshman goalie Gab Lawrence (Yorktown, N.Y.) earned her third consecutive shutout. The Thoroughbreds are 9-3-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the league, they are at Vassar at 3 p.m. Saturday.

The men's tennis doubles team of senior Spencer Cheng (Wainbridge Island, Wash.) and freshman Jimmy Sherpa (West Vancouver, B.C.) finished fifth at the 2010 USTA/ITA Small College Championships in Mobile, Ala. The pair defeated Amherst's Moritz Koenig and Wes Waterman 6-4, 7-5 in the consolation finals.

Volleyball posted a 2-1 record this week; beating Sage and Potsdam but falling to Middlebury. Senior Meredith Palmer (Montvale, N.J.) had a strong week, averaging 10.67 kills and 3.67 blocks, while junior Kelley Vershbow (Washington, D.C.) averaged nine kills and two blocks. The Thoroughbreds improved to 17-4 and will host the Skidmore Classic this Friday and Saturday at the Williamson Sports Center.

Men's soccer posted a 1-1 record this week after a pair of 1-0 games. Skidmore lost a tough 1-0 match to Oneonta on Wednesday, but came back Saturday to defeat SUNY New Paltz. Senior Doug Yeates (Richmond, Vt.) scored the game-winner against New Paltz and junior goalie Nick Peterson (West Hartford, Conn.) allowed no goals and made seven saves in 135 minutes of action this week. The Thoroughbreds are 7-6-2 and travel to Cazenovia for a non-league matchup at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19.
