Fall sports nearing end of season with new records to savor

The seventh-ranked field hockey team posted a 2-0 record with a pair of 7-0 home victories over Hartwick and Wheaton this past weekend. Senior Christine Kemp (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) became Skidmore's all-time leading scorer in Saturday's Wheaton game as the Thoroughbreds won their 15 th straight, a new program record. Against Hartwick, Kemp tallied four goals and had an assist. Seniors Katie Potter (Rumson, N.J.) and Brittany O'Brien (Ridgefield, Conn.), and junior Lauren Tobias (New City, N.Y.) also scored. Against Wheaton, Kemp again had four goals and an assist as O'Brien added a goal and an assist. Junior Annie Rosencrans picked up two assists. Skidmore improved to 16-1 overall and hosts Union in the Liberty League semifinals at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3.

Women's soccer played Nazareth to a 0-0 tie in their only action of the week. Junior goalie Meghan Sleezer (Gloversville, N.Y.) made six saves for the Thoroughbreds in the shutout. Skidmore is 10-4-3 as the No. 4 seed in the Liberty League Tournament and faces off against top seed William Smith at 2:30 p.m. Nov. 3 at Geneva.

Volleyball went 2-2 in this weekend's Skidmore Invitational. The team picked up 3-1 wins over Plattsburgh and Ithaca but suffered losses to New Paltz and Cortland. Senior Meredith Palmer (Montvale, N.J.) was selected to the All-Tournament team after finishing the weekend with 53 kills and 11 blocks. The Thoroughbreds are now 23-6 overall and are at St. Lawrence this weekend for the Liberty League Tournament.

Men's soccer dropped a 2-1 decision to Union in the team's final game of the season, Saturday afternoon at Wachenheim Field. Tim Lueders-Dumont (Lincoln, Vt.) scored for Skidmore and senior Steve Vasquez (Central Falls, R.I.) made six stops in goal. The Thoroughbreds finished the season with a 7-8-4 overall and 1-4-1 league record.

Men's and women's swimming and diving opened up their seasons with meets at St. Lawrence and Potsdam. Sophomore Jesse Adler (Chappaqua, N.Y.) was a double-winner at Potsdam, taking first in the 200 IM (2:08.56) and the 100 Backstroke (58.48) while junior diver Rob Zilinyi (Fairfield, Conn.) took first in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives at St. Lawrence and took first in the 1-meter and second in the 3-meter at Potsdam. For the women, sophomore Carrie Koch (Wellesley, Mass.) won the 500 Free (5:40.03) against St. Lawrence and the 200 Free (2:05.62) against Potsdam. Sophomore Kristen Stearns (Torrington, Conn.) earned two first place finishes in the 1-meter dives and a first and second place finish in the 3-meter dives. The Thoroughbreds return to action this Saturday at Vassar. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
