Athletes rake in end of season league honors

A total of 15 Skidmore College fall athletes from field hockey and men's and women's soccer received Liberty League awards Thursday for their performances during the 2010 season. 

Field hockey took home all four major awards with senior Christine Kemp (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) named Offensive Player of the Year for the third straight year, senior goalie Liz Catinella (Sudbury, Mass.) earned Defensive Player of the Year honors, freshman Kelly Blackhurst (North River, N.Y.) received Rookie of the Year and head coach Beth Hallenbeck, along with assistant coaches Nicole Savage and Darryl Michael, earned Coaching Staff of the Year for a second consecutive season.

Kemp, Catinella and Blackhurst also received All-Liberty League First Team honors; they were joined by senior Claire Superak (Carrboro, N.C.), senior Lauren McCarthy (Ipswich, Mass.) and junior Annie Rosencrans (Riverside, Conn.). Senior Katie Potter was named to the second team and classmate Julia Sarni (Concord, Mass.) received honorable mention.

Women's soccer had five athletes receive end-of-year honors, starting with senior Lindsay Schmitt (Mendon, Mass.) earning Defensive Player of the Year and first-team honors. Schmitt was joined on the first team by sophomore Kelsey Yam (Longmeadow, Mass.), while junior Catherine Kapustynski (Darien, Conn.) was named to the second team and sophomore Alyssa Miller (Mill Valley, Calif.) and senior Dana Brill (Newton, Mass.) received honorable mention.

Men's soccer had a pair of seniors receive All-Liberty League Second Team honors. Matt Kelsey (Cambridge, Mass.) and Doug Yeates (Richmond, Vt.) both were named to the second team for the Thoroughbreds. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
