Field hockey captures third straight Liberty League title

The seventh-ranked field hockey team earned its third consecutive Liberty League Championship with Saturday's 4-1 win over No. 14 Hamilton at Thoroughbred Field. The team will now host the second and third rounds of the NCAA Tournament this Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 12 and 13. Senior Christine Kemp (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) was named tournament MVP after recording two goals and two assists in the championship game. Seniors Liz Catinella (Sudbury, Mass.), Claire Superak (Carborro, N.C.), Lauren McCarthy (Ipswich, Mass.) Julia Sarni (Concord, Mass.) and junior Annie Rosencrans (Riverside, Conn.) were all selected to the All-Tournament Team. The Thoroughbreds improved to 18-1, tying a program record for victories and extending their winning streak to 17 games. 

Women's soccer lost in the first round of the Liberty League Tournament to William Smith, 2-1, Wednesday afternoon at Geneva. Freshman Christine Bellotti (Medfield, Mass.) scored the Thoroughbreds lone goal. Skidmore finished the season with a 10-5-3 overall record.

Volleyball went 1-3 in this weekend's Liberty League Tournament at St. Lawrence. Senior Meredith Palmer (Montvale, N.J.) was selected to the All-Tournament team and named Liberty League Player of the Year. Sophomore Sam Friedman (Los Angeles, Calif.) joined Palmer on the All-Liberty League First Team, while junior Kelley Vershbow (Washington, D.C.) and sophomore Mallory Mendelsohn (San Francisco, Calif.) earned second team honors. Skidmore finished the season with a 24-9 overall record.

Men's and women's swimming and diving competed at Vassar, with the men earning a 148-121 victory and the women falling 162-120. Senior Stephen Lento (Cincinnati, Ohio) was a triple-winner, taking first in the 200 Free (1:54.28), 500 Free (5:13.15) and 200 IM (2:09.18). Sophomore Jesse Adler (Chappaqua, N.Y.) won the 200 Back (2:04.45) and took second in the 100 Back (58.93), while junior diver Rob Zilinyi (Fairfield, Conn.) took first in the 1-meter (113.55) and 3-meter dives (143.50). For the women, sophomore Carrie Koch (Wellesley, Mass.) won the 500 Free (5:29.97) and the 200 Free (2:03.38) in career best times and freshman Sarah Shaw (Merion, Pa.) took first in the 1000 Free (11:29.90) and earned third-place finishes in the 500 Free (5:36.16) and 200 Fly (2:30.15). The Thoroughbreds host the College of St. Rose, this Saturday at the Williamson Sports Center. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
