Program to focus on the good news from Haiti

December 7, 2010

Dr. Sylvia McDevitt, assistant professor of biology at Skidmore, and Barbara DiTomasso, of the Albany Diocese Committee on Peace and Justice, will present "The Good News from Haiti," in a program scheduled from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8.

Free and open to all, the discussion will take place in the Intercultural Center (ICC) in Case Center. (This location has been changed from the originally scheduled Gannett Auditorium.)

The speakers will lead a discussion of recent events in the nation of Haiti. McDevitt will speak on the history and epidemiology of cholera, which is spreading in Haiti. DiTomasso, from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany, is active in raising awareness and funds for Haitian organizations. She will speak on the current social and economic situation in Haiti as a result of this year's earthquake and cholera outbreak. She will highlight efforts by Haitians to improve the lives of Haitian citizens and speak about "the good news" from Haiti.

This program is the latest event to help keep people aware of progress in Haiti this year. Skidmore students and others in the campus community have supported Haitian relief efforts throughout the year, by collecting funds for aid groups and contributing essentials to help those affected by the earthquake.
