Denise L. Smith, professor of exercise science, is co-author (with Bo Fernhall of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) of Advanced Cardiovascular Exercise Physiology (2011, Human Kinetics).

Part of the Human Kinetics' Advanced Exercise Physiology Series, the book is for students and professionals working within exercise science and related health professions. Smith and Fernhall systematically detail the effect of acute and chronic exercise training on each component of the cardiovascular system: the heart, the vasculature, and the blood.

For Smith, who also is the Class of 1961 Term Professor at Skidmore, this is her second book in the past year. In 2010, she and co-author Sharon A. Plowman saw the publication of the third edition of their book Exercise Physiology for Health, Fitness, and Performance(Lippincott Williams & Wilkins). The book combines basic exercise physiology with special applications and contains flexible organization of independent units, so instructors can teach according to their own approach.

Smith received her Ph.D. degree at the University of Illinois. She has collaborated extensively with fire-service organizations in her research, and has served in leadership roles in the American College of Sports Medicine. She is a member of the American Physiological Society. Her studies have been published in the American Journal of Cardiology, Medicine and Science in Sport and Exercise, Ergonomics, and Aviation, Space, and Environmental Medicine, among others.
