The annual Skidmore College Student Art Exhibition, sponsored by the college's Studio Art Department, will be on exhibit in Schick Art Gallery from Thursday, Feb. 3, through Friday, March 11, 2011. An opening reception will take place in the gallery from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3.

One of the highlights of the Schick calendar every year, the Student Art Exhibition invariably celebrates the talent, creativity, and imagination of Skidmore students.Guest juror for this year's show is Rachel Seligman, an art professional who has served in curatorial positions at the Lake George Arts Project and Union College. She will select the exhibition from work completed by Skidmore students in the areas ofceramics, communication design, drawing and painting, electronic media, fiber arts, installation, metals, photography, printmaking, and sculpture during 2010.

From an average of more than 250 entries the juror typically chooses one-third to one-quarter for exhibit, and singles out the most outstanding work for special awards. Prizes and gift certificates totaling over $1,000 are fundedannuallythrough donations made by friends of the gallery, campus organizations, and Saratoga community businesses. The prizes will be announced at the opening reception.

Seligman is a 1991 Skidmore graduate (B.A. degree, art history) who earned an M.A. degree in art history from George Washington University in 1993. She worked at the National Museum of American Art in Washington, D.C., and the Lake George Arts Project and Courthouse Gallery before becoming director and curator of the Mandeville Gallery and curator of the permanent college at Union College. She has curated a number of exhibitions of contemporary art both at the Mandeville Gallery and elsewhere, including the Albany Center Galleries and the Saratoga County Arts Council.

In addition, Seligman has taught art history at Skidmore, Adirondack Community College, and the College of Saint Rose.

The Skidmore Student Exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1 to 4:30 p.m. weekends. For complete information and exhibition updates, please click here.
