Award

Caroline D'Abate, associate professor of management, presented two papers at the IAMB (International Academy of Management and Business) annual meeting in January. The first paper, titled "Exploring How Stories Facilitate Learning in Work-Related Mentoring Interactions," was co-written with Hali Alpert '10 and was based on collaborative research conducted over the 2009-10 academic year. The second paper, titled "The Impact of Mentoring on Employee Attitudes, Competencies, and Performance," was co-written with Erik Eddy and Paul Thurston of Siena College. That paper won IAMB's Best Paper Award for applied research, given its focus on the strategic value of mentoring in a Fortune 500 firm.

Activities

Beau Breslin, professor of government and director, First-Year Experience, and Sheldon Solomon, professor of psychology, were panelists at public discussions that followed the recent Saratoga Film Forum screenings of Waiting for Superman. The post-movie discussions featured local educators, parents, union advocates, and school administrators talking about the American education system.

Marny Krause, senior gift officer, has been named to the board of trustees of Southwestern Vermont Health Care in Bennington, Vt.

Laura Finnerty Paul, lecturer, Department of Management and Business, presented a paper at the IAMB annual meeting in January. Titled"Assessing Creative Potential: Individuals vs. Groups," it was co-written with Sophie Cohen '10 based on collaborative research developed out of her senior thesis.

Mary Zeiss Stange, professor of women's studies and religion, was a keynote speaker at the fourth international conference of the International Society for the Study of Religion, Nature and Culture in Perth, Australia, at the University of Western Australia, Dec. 16-19. The conference theme was "Living on the Edge," and my plenary talk was titled "Hunting the Edges: The Intersection between 'Hunter Conservationism' and 'Green Environmentalism'."

Publications

Pat Oles, associate professor of social work, is the author of "Ransom is paid, but everyone's a hostage," an opinion essay published Dec. 14, 2010, in the Albany Times Union.

Jay Rogoff, lecturer in English, has published his poem "Serenade" in Southwest Review, Vol. 95, No. 4 (2010). Two other poems, "The House" and "Exuberance," appear in a special sonnet issue of Literary Imagination, Vol. 12, No. 3 (2010), along with his article, "The Aesthetics of Contemporary Sonnet Sequences: The Examples of Salter and Muldoon."

Denise L. Smith, professor of exercise science, is co-author (with Bo Fernhall of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) of Advanced Cardiovascular Exercise Physiology (2011, Human Kinetics). The book is part of the Human Kinetics' Advanced Exercise Physiology Series.

Gordon Thompson, professor of music, has added a new entry titled "Sixties British Pop in the Classroom" to his blog on the Oxford University Press Web site. Click here to read.

Hedi Jaouad, professor of French, was interviewed by the Albany Times Union for a Jan. 16 story titled "Native of Tunisia sees potential," regarding the recent unrest in his homeland. Jaouad has family and friends in Tunisia, and visits nearly every year.

Virginia Murphy-Berman, visiting professor of psychology, presented an "Academic Minute" on the topic of happiness on Dec. 29, 2010, on WAMC-FM. Listen here.

Julia Routbort, director of the Counseling Center, was a source for "College counselors in demand" published Jan. 26 in The Sunday Gazette.

Ron Seyb, associate professor of government, provided in-studio commentary on WNYT-TV, Channel 13, when the station presented a live broadcast Jan. 21 of President Barack Obama's visit to GE in Schenectady.

Mary Zeiss Stange, professor of women's studies and religion, did a half-hour interview Jan. 13 about her new book Hard Grass on the "Community Voices" program on KPCW public radio in Park City, Utah. Listen to it here.
