Altimar hits 1,000 career points to highlight busy weekend

Men's basketball senior Jeff Altimar (Medfield, Mass.) became the 13th player in Skidmore history to score 1,000 career points during a 1-1 week for the Thoroughbreds. Altimar scored a game-high 13 points in Friday's 65-57 win at Clarkson to reach the milestone and also recorded a game-high eight rebounds. Junior Gerard O'Shea (West Sand Lake, N.Y.) added 11 points. During Saturday's 74-66 loss to St. Lawrence, junior Melvis Langyintuo (Tamale, Ghana) led Skidmore with 19 points as classmate O'Shea added 18 and sophomore Kevin Dahill (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) chipped in 12 points.   The Thoroughbreds are 9-6 overall and 3-2 in the Liberty League; the team hosts Williams at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25.  

Ice hockey picked up a pair of victories over Amherst and Hamilton this past week.In the 3-2 Amherst match, freshman Tony Giacin (St. Louis, Mo.) and sophomores Brendan Cottam (Belmont, Mass.) and Julian Malakorn (Warwick, R.I.) each scored.On Saturday at Hamilton, Skidmore erased a three-goal first period deficit and won on Malakorn's power play goal in the third period.Senior Hunter Thayer (Shelburne, Vt.) and junior Nick Dupuis (Holyoke, Mass.) each tallied two assists.Junior goalie Colin Bessey (Montclair, N.J.) picked up the wins, recording 49 saves on the weekend.  Skidmore is now 5-10-2 overall and 4-5-2 in the league.  The team will host Connecticut College at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28.

Women's basketball posted a 1-1 record this week, defeating Clarkson and losing to St. Lawrence.Sophomore Logan Frederick (Arlington, Va.) and freshman Michela Ottati (Fort Johnson, N.Y.) each tallied 10 points in the 52-48 victory at Clarkson.  Against St. Lawrence, Frederick recorded a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds, while junior Jessie Kavana (Mahopac, N.Y.) contributed 11 points off the bench.   The Thoroughbreds return to action Friday, Jan. 28, hosting Vassar for a 6 p.m. tip-off.

Men's and women's swimming and diving had a busy week with meets against Oneonta, Hartwick and at RPI's Kumpf Invitational.  For the women, sophomore diver Kristen Stearns (Torrington, Conn.) took first place in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives against Oneonta and Hartwick and against Oneonta, sophomore Carrie Koch (Wellesley, Mass.) won the 200 free and senior Kelsey Carson (Stamford, Conn.) won the 200 fly.  For the men, freshman Peter Quattromani (Providence, R.I.) was a double winner in the 1000 and 500 free against Oneonta, while senior Stephen Lento (Cincinnati, Ohio) won the 100 free.  Both teams return to action Jan. 30 at RPI. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
