Ice hockey continues win streak

Ice hockey has now won four straight games after a pair of home victories over Connecticut College and Tufts. Against Conn College, freshman Tony Giacin (St. Louis, Mo.) recorded a hat trick and junior goalie Andrew Ross (McKinney, Texas) made 21 saves to lead Skidmore to a 4-2 victory. In Saturday's 6-2 win over Tufts, junior Tyler Doremus (Aspen, Colo.) had two goals and classmate Nick Dupuis (Holyoke, Mass.) recorded three assists, while junior goalie Colin Bessey (Montclair, N.J.) made 23 stops in net.   The Thoroughbreds improved to 7-10-2 overall and 6-5-2 in the league. The team will travel to the University of New England Friday, Feb. 4. 

Men's basketball posted a 2-1 record this week, picking up a pair of league wins over Vassar and Rensselaer and falling to #5 Williams.   Against Vassar, all 11 players to see the floor for Skidmore scored, led by 14 off the bench from junior Brian Lowry (West Hartford, Conn.). In the 81-77 win over Rensselaer, Lowry's 19 points led four Thoroughbreds in double-digits, including freshman Quenten Howard (New Haven, Conn.), 12, and juniors Gerard O'Shea (West Sand Lake, N.Y.) and Terron Victoria (Albany, N.Y.) 14 and 10, respectively. Now 11-7 overall and 5-2 in the Liberty League, Skidmore will host Hamilton at 8 p.m. this Friday.

Women's basketball had a 1-1 week, picking up a win over Vassar and losing to Rensselaer. Sophomore Logan Frederick (Arlington, Va.) recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds as junior Christina Gargiso (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored 18 and classmate Megan Gaugler (Amsterdam, N.Y.) added 16 points, four assists, and four steals in the win over Vassar. Against Rensselaer, freshman Michela Ottati (Fort Johnson, N.Y.) scored a team-high 18 points and Gargiso added 15 in the 74-59 defeat. The Thoroughbreds are now 8-9 overall (4-3 league) and host Hamilton at 6 p.m. Friday.

Men's and women's swimming and diving traveled to take on Liberty League rival Rensselaer Saturday afternoon. For the men, freshmen Taylor Best (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Peter Quattromani (Providence, R.I.) took second in the 200 IM and 1000 Free, respectively, and sophomore Jesse Adler (Cahppaqua, N.Y.) finished second in the 50 Free. On the women's side, sophomore Carrie Koch (Wellesley, Mass.) finished second with a career-best time in the 200 IM, while freshman Sarah Shaw (Merrion, Pa.) took second in the 100 Back and 1000 Free and classmate Katherine Kelloway (Marblehead, Mass.) placed second in the 500 Free and third in the 100 Fly. Also, sophomore diver Kristen Stearns (Torrington, Conn.) finished second in the 1-meter dive. The women will host the Skidmore Sprint Invitational at 1 p.m. this Saturday, Feb. 5, as part of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, while the men are off until the Vassar Sprint Invite Saturday, Feb. 12. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
