Men's basketball wins Liberty League title; now NCAA bound

Men's basketball earned its first Liberty League Championship and first trip to the NCAA Tournament after beating RPI and Hamilton in this weekend's Liberty League Tournament at Hobart. Juniors Melvis Langyintuo (Tamale, Ghana), Gerard O'Shea (West Sand Lake, N.Y.) and Terron Victoria (Albany, N.Y.) all garnered All-Tournament Team honors; Langyintuo was named tournament MVP. The team is 18-9, setting a new program record for wins in a season, and will face Amherst in the NCAA first round Friday, March 4, at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Mass. Time of the game and ticket details will be announced. 

Men's and women's swimming and diving wrapped up a successful UNYSCSA meet in which 13 school records fell.On the women's side, sophomore Carrie Koch (Wellesley, Mass.) set two new individual college records in the 200 Freestyle (1:57.90) and 500 Freestyle (5:13.89), finished eighth in the 200 Free (the team's highest individual finish of the meet), and was part of the seventh-place record-setting 800 Freestyle Relay team (8:07.03). For the men, senior captain Stephen Lento (Cincinatti, Ohio) set college records in the 200 Freestyle (1:48.84), 500 Freestyle (4:58.17), and 400 Individual Medley (4:21.73), and was part of the 200 and 400 Freestyle relays.

Men's lacrosse opened its 2011 campaign with a 9-8 victory at Babson. Sophomore J.P. Sullivan (Floral Park, N.Y.) scored four goals, while classmate Mike Holden (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and senior Jeremy Goldman (Port Washington, N.Y.) added a goal and an assist each. Freshman goalie Matt Diaco (Kinnelon, N.J.) had 17 saves between the pipes. The Thoroughbreds return to action at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at Western Connecticut State.

Men's tennis won 7-2 Saturday over defending league champion Vassar. Skidmore swept at doubles and got wins at singles from senior Yahia Imam (Cairo, Egypt), sophomore Alex Fromson (Newton, Mass.), and freshmen Oliver Loutsenko (Bellmore, N.Y.) and Jimmy Sherpa (West Vancouver, B.C.). The team resumes play March 14 when against LaFayette in Claremont, Calif.

Women's tennis opened its spring schedule with a 9-0 win at NYU. Senior Rachel Loeb (Greenwood Village, Colo.) picked up wins at number-one singles and number-one doubles. Other doubles winners included junior Tory Engros (Bronxville, N.Y.) and freshmen Robyn Baird (Potomac, Md.) and Molly Nolan (Montauk, N.Y.). The Thoroughbreds are at William Smith at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 5.

Ice hockey suffered a 5-0 defeat to Babson in the ECAC East quarterfinals Saturday night. Skidmore finished the season with a 9-14-3 record. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
