The weather may be chilly but the competition is hot

Women's lacrosse improved to 4-0 after a dominating 19-7 win over Castleton last Tuesday night. Senior Lindsay Stavola (Montauk, N.Y.) led the way posting a 10-points game with six goals and four assists, while classmate Lauren McCarthy (Ipswich, Mass.) finished with two goals, two assists and 10 draw controls and junior Rachel Klein (Far Hills, N.J.) made seven saves in goal. Skidmore hosts Trinity at 7 p.m. Wednesday. 

Men's lacrosse continued its fast start, improving to 6-1 after beating Williams and Kings Point. Against Williams, senior Ben Cornell (Natick, Mass.) had three goals and sophomore Bryan Connolly (Babylon, N.Y.) finished with two goals and an assist. In the Kings Point victory, sophomore Mike Perlow (Briarcliff, N.Y.) scored five times and junior Ryan Paradis (Brookside, N.J.) won 17-of-19 face-offs and had a game-high 10 ground balls. Junior goalie Connor Dowling (Darien, Conn.) picked up the win in both contests, stopping 13 of 24 shots he faced. The 19 th-ranked Thoroughbreds open league play at 4 p.m. Wednesday when they host the eighth-ranked RPI Engineers.

Baseball opened its 2011 Liberty League schedule with a doubleheader split against Rochester. Freshman Erik Watkins (Sudbury, Mass.) drove in four runs on the day, while senior Rob Rubenstein (Highland Park, N.J.) and junior Zack Rudman (Pittsford, N.Y.) each drove in a pair. Senior Nick Laracuente (Tenafly, N.J.) improved to 3-0 after tossing seven strong innings and Rudman notched his first save, holding the Yellowjackets hitless in two innings of work. Skidmore is 8-2 on the season and travels to Vassar for a doubleheader this Saturday, April 2.

Men's tennis earned an easy 8-1 win at Stevens this past weekend. Senior Spencer Cheng (Bainbridge Island, Wash.), junior Luke Granger (Allendale, N.J.), sophomore Alex Fromson (Newton, Mass.) and freshman Oliver Loutsenko (Bellmore, N.Y.) all posted 2-0 records on the day. The Thoroughbreds return to action April 2, when they take on Amherst at Vassar.

Women's tennis suffered a 7-2 loss at Vassar in its only action of the week. Sophomore Nataly Mendoza (San Francisco, Calif.) posted a pair of victories, winning at number-two singles and teaming up with junior Tory Engros (Bronxville, N.Y.) for a win at number-one doubles. Skidmore takes on The College of New Jersey this Saturday in Wellesley, Mass.

The Skidmore riders finished their perfect season with a near-perfect score: the undefeated Thoroughbreds scored 47 of a possible 49 points last Saturday at Morrisville State. Class winners were Flavia D'Urso, Chelsea Jones, Kelly Campbell, Melissa Hillberg, Emma Weinstein, Hanae Kimura, Julia Mazzarella, Megan Merritt, Erika Wohl, and Cecilia Culp. Campbell won both her classes and was the High Point Rider. Olivia Cameron finished second in both of her classes, securing her title as this year's Zone 2 Region 3 Cacchione Rider. Cameron will compete against the top intercollegiate riders in the country at nationals, scheduled May 4-8 in Lexington, Ket. The riders will compete April 9 at the Zone championships in Canton, N.Y., hosted by St. Lawrence University.
