Psychology students announce autism awareness events
Skidmore's observance of April as Autism Awareness Month features a number of activities
coordinated by students of Rachel Mann-Rosan, visiting assistant professor of psychology.
Students in Mann-Rosan's "Developmental Disabilities and Autism" course (PS 212B)
have announced the following schedule of events, all of which are free and open to
the public:
Tuesday, April 5, 7 p.m., Emerson Auditorium, Palamountain Hall - The Horse Boy,a film by Michel Orion Scott and Rupert Isaacson. How far would you travel to heal
someone you love? An intensely personal yet epic spiritual journey, The Horse Boy follows one Texas couple and their autistic son as they trek on horseback through
Outer Mongolia in an attempt to find healing for their son.
Tuesday, April 12, 5 p.m., Room 201, Palamountain Hall - Communication, Sensory Diets, Positive Behavior Supports and Other Treatment Methods to Address the Unique Challenges of Persons with ASD."
A panel discussion regarding communication, sensory, and behavioral supports and various treatment methods aimed toward assisting persons with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Panelists will include Beth Mormando, speech and language pathologist, Wendy Ashe, certified occupational therapy assistant, and Cassie Estey, behavior specialist from Saratoga Bridges.
Wednesday, April 13, 5 p.m., Room 280, Bolton Hall - "Autism: A Parent's Perspective." Panel discussion featuring parents who will sharetheir stories of raising children with autism spectrum disorders.
Wednesday, April 13, 6:30 p.m., Room 201, Palamountain Hall - "People with Autism Spectrum Disorders: Diversity in Your Community," a discussion led byJulie Marks and Deborah Garrelts with members of ASPIRe N.Y., Inc.Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) are a fast-growing segment of the population. Learn more about the high-functioning people with ASDs that you might meet in your neighborhood, job site, or college community.
Thursday, April 14, 10 a.m., Case Center - "Autism Awareness Event Poster Presentations." The students of PS 212B, "Developmental Disabilities & Autism" will lead the presentation.Have you learned something from the awareness posters on campus? The students who developed these posters will be available to answer questions and discuss the various topics presented.
Thursday, April 14, 6 p.m., Room 201, Palamountain Hall - "Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Brief Epidemiological Review," byPaul A. H. Partridge, Ph.D.A review of the recent research on the epidemiology of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)
and a discussion of some of the proposed changes to the ASD diagnoses currently being
considered for the next diagnostic manual.
