Spring sports rolling along

The 19 th-ranked men's lacrosse team improved to 8-1 after a pair of league wins over No. 8 Rensselaer and St. Lawrence. In the 11-9 Rensselaer game, senior Jacques Ward (New York, N.Y.) scored two goals to go along with seven ground balls and six caused turnovers. Sophomores Mike Perlow (Briarcliff, N.Y.) and Mike Holden (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) added two goals apiece. At St. Lawrence, Holden netted a game-high five goals, while senior Ben Cornell (Natick, Mass.) had two goals and three assists and sophomore Bryan Connolly (Babylon, N.Y.) finished with two goals and two assists in the 16-10 win. Junior goalie Connor Dowling (Darien, Conn.) improved to 6-0 after making 13 saves against Rensselaer and nine against St. Lawrence. Skidmore returns to action Tuesday, April 12, hosting Middlebury at 4:30 p.m. 

Softball got back on track, posting a 3-1 record this week, splitting a doubleheader with Castleton and sweeping Utica. Against Castleton, junior Christina Gargiso (Staten Island, N.Y.) and sophomore Carol Brown (Seattle, Wash.) each drove in three runs and junior Abby Fuhrman (Amherst, Mass.) allowed just one run in five innings of work for the win. The Thoroughbred bats came alive at Utica, hitting six home runs en route to a dramatic sweep. In game one, Skidmore erased a seven-run deficit in the top of the seventh behind back-to-back home runs from sophomore Julia Schwartz (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and senior Caitlin Ketcham (North Clarendon, Vt.) for a 9-8 win. In game two, senior Charlotte Evans (Richland, Mich.) broke a 7-7 tie in extras with a grand slam for an 11-7 victory. The Thoroughbreds are now 5-9 overall and take on Sage this Wednesday, April 6.

Baseball went 2-3 this week, dominating a mid-week matchup at Cobleskill and going 1-3 against Vassar. In the 14-0 Cobleskill shutout, senior Rob Rubenstein (Highland Park, N.J.) went 4-for-5 with a triple and two RBI and classmate Zach Brown (Victor, N.Y.) drove in three runs. On Saturday, Skidmore suffered a pair of walk-off defeats at Vassar. On Sunday, the Thoroughbreds hosted the Brewers for a doubleheader and after dropping game one, senior Nick Laracuente (Tenafly, N.J.) was dominant in game two. He tossed a complete game one-hitter, allowing an unearned run while striking out nine to lead his team to a 6-1 victory. Skidmore hosts Hamilton for a single nine-inning game at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Women's lacrosse went 1-2 this past week, falling to No. 4 Trinity and in OT at Rensselaer before a dominating win at Vassar. Senior Lindsay Stavola (Montauk, N.Y.) had a 14-point week with seven goals and seven assists, including an eight-point performance against Vassar. Junior Lauren Madden (Huntington, N.Y.) and senior Lauren McCarthy (Ipswich, Mass.) also had big weeks, finishing with eight goals and seven goals, respectively. The Thoroughbreds are at Union at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Men's tennis went 1-1 this week, falling to No. 4 Amherst before picking up an 8-1 win over Hobart. Against Amherst, the number-one doubles team of senior Spencer Cheng (Wainbridge Island, Wash.) and freshman Jimmy Sherpa (West Vancouver, B.C.) was victorious and senior Yahia Imam (Cairo, Egypt) won at number-four singles. In the win over Hobart, Imam, junior Luke Granger (Allendale, N.J.), sophomore Alex Fromson (Newton, Mass.) and freshman Oliver Loutsenko (Bellmore, N.Y.) all posted 2-0 records. Skidmore is at St. Lawrence at 1 p.m. April 9.

Women's tennis suffered a pair of tough 5-4 losses this weekend against TCNJ and Wellesley. Against TCNJ, junior Tory Engros (Bronxville, N.Y.) posted a 2-0 record, winning at number-two doubles and at number-four singles. Freshmen Melissa Hirsch (Alamo, Calif.) and Robyn Baird (Potomac, Md.) also won. At Wellesley, Hirsch picked up a pair of wins at number-two singles and number-three doubles with partner Molly Nolan (Montauk, N.Y.), who also won at number-six singles. The Thoroughbreds host Williams at 1 p.m. April 16. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
