Lots of games, lots of wins for spring teams

Softball posted a 4-0 record this week after doubleheader sweeps of Sage and Green Mountain. Against Sage, freshman Katie Sorochka (Jackson, N.J.) tossed a no-hitter in the second game to lead Skidmore to a 5-0 win. Senior Christina Hein (Burke, Va.) cracked a solo home run and sophomore Julia Schwartz (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) added a two-run double. In the opener, senior Charlotte Evans (Richland, Mich.) had a two-run double and classmate Caitlin Ketcham (North Clarendon, Vt.) drove in a pair. Against Green Mountain, junior pitchers Sam Crose (Assonet, Mass.) and Abby Fuhrman (Amherst, Mass.) each struck out 11 batters in their respective starts to lead to an 11-0, 10-1 sweep. The Thoroughbreds improved to 9-9 and host MCLA at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 14.

Baseball finished a perfect week with a win over Hamilton and a doubleheader sweep at St. Joseph's. Against Hamilton, sophomore Jordan Keysor (Cadyville, N.Y.) picked up the win and junior Zack Rudman (Pittsford, N.Y.), sophomore Alex Barber (Cambridge, Mass.) and freshman Erik Watkins (Sudbury, Mass.) each drove in a run. At St. Joseph's, senior Nick Laracuente (Tenafly, N.J.) continued his dominance on the mound, improving to 5-0 and tying the career record for victories with 20. Offensively, sophomore Leejay Pollacchi (Porter Corners, N.Y.) had two hits and scored twice in the opener and senior Rob Rubenstein (Highland Park, N.J.) had two RBI in each game. Skidmore is now 13-5 and hosts Middlebury at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 12.

Women's lacrosse went 2-1 on the week following a trio of Liberty League road contests. After falling to Union on Tuesday night, the Thoroughbreds responded with a 15-9 win at Clarkson behind senior Lindsay Stavola (Montauk, N.Y.), who tied a program record with nine goals. On Saturday, Skidmore rallied from two goals down in the final 2:06 to force overtime on senior Lauren McCarthy's (Ipswich, Mass.) and then win on a goal from senior Sydney Weill (Woodbridge, Conn.) in overtime for an exciting 11-10 win at St. Lawrence. The Thoroughbreds are now 7-3 overall and 3-2 in the league. They host Williams at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Men's tennis earned a pair of victories over St. Lawrence and TCNJ this past weekend. At St. Lawrence, junior Luke Granger (Allendale, N.J.) posted a 2-0 record, winning at number-one singles and teaming with senior Yahia Imam (Cairo, Egypt) to win at number-two doubles. Against TCNJ, freshman Oliver Loutsenko (Bellmore, N.Y.) went 2-0, winning at number-two singles and teaming with sophomore Alex Fromson (Newton, Mass.) to earn a win at number-three doubles. Skidmore is at Williams on April 20.

Golf won its second consecutive tournament, beating second-place SUNY Delhi by 28 strokes at the NYU/Manhattanville Spring Invite. Sophomore Anthony Dilisio (Swampscott, Mass.) finished third after shooting a 72-74-146. Senior Joe Flowers (Benton, Maine) finished fourth with a 72-75-147. Dilisio and Flowers were named to the All-Tournament team along with junior Peter Anderson (Wellesley, Mass.). The Thoroughbreds are at the Kravetz Invitational Friday, April 15.

The riding team finishedsecond to host St. Lawrence at this weekend's Zone II national qualifying show, securing a berth to the IHSA national show scheduled May 5-8 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. The Thoroughbreds won the 2010 national championship. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
