Busy opening week for Thoroughbred athletics

The seventh-ranked field hockey team opened its season with a pair of road victories over Castelton and Babson. At Castleton, sophomore Kelly Blackhurst (North River, N.Y.) had a pair of goals, senior Annie Rosencrans (Riverside, Conn.) had a goal and an assist, and freshman goalie Haley McDougall (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) recorded her first collegiate shutout in the 3-0 win. At Babson, six different players recorded a point and McDougall made six saves as the Thoroughbreds moved to 2-0 with a 3-1 win. Skidmore returns to action Saturday, Sept. 10, at New Paltz.

Volleyball posted a 3-1 record during the weekend's Red Dragon Invitational at Cortland, recording wins over Penn State-Behrend, Ithaca, and Rochester before falling to host Cortland in the championship. Junior Carolyn Bottelier (Washington, D.C.) was selected to the All-Tournament Team after totaling 36 kills, 15 assists, seven service aces, 40 digs, and seven total blocks. The Thoroughbreds resume play this weekend at the Rochester Invitational.

Women's soccer opened its season with a 1-1 record at the Flower City Tournament last weekend in Rochester. On Friday, Skidmore picked up a 2-1 win over Geneseo behind goals from juniors Michelle Finan (Richmond, Vt.) and Kelsey Yam (Longmeadow, Mass.), before suffering a 2-0 loss to Rochester in Saturday's championship game. Yam was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Offensive Player. The Thoroughbreds host the Skidmore Invitational Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 10-11, at Wachenheim Field.

Men's soccer went 1-1 in the season-opening Plattsburgh Cardinal Classic. After suffering a 1-0 loss to Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on day one, Skidmore came back on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over St. Joseph's. In the win, junior Aaron Krepack (Mill Valley, Calif.) and freshman Brock Bakewell (Tuscon, Ariz.) each scored and junior Marcus Goldbas (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) tallied a pair of assists. Skidmore hosts New Paltz at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13. ~By Cody Berschwinger
