Campus to witness, remember events of 9/11/01

September 7, 2011

Skidmore College will observe the 10 th anniversary of 9/11/01 with two events, both of which are open to the public. Each activity is scheduled as follows for Sunday, Sept. 11:

--5 p.m., Wilson Chapel: 9/11 Memorial Observance. Readings and silence, accompanied by Alexandra Guest '14 playing Bach selections on the cello. The Rev. Richard Chrisman, campus chaplain, will lead the service.

--9:30 p.m., Davis Auditorium, Palamountain Hall: Screening of the documentary film Beyond Belief.Susan Retik and Patti Quigley were both pregnant when their husbands were killed on 9/11. Family, friends, and support from around the world enabled them to rebuild their lives. Choosing to transcend the prevalent response of anger and violent retaliation, they founded the organization Beyond the 11 th to reach out to Afghan widows with whom they felt a kinship. In 2006, Retik and Quigley traveled to Afghanistan to meet their Afghan counterparts and see firsthand the work of the organization they founded.   Beyond Belief  documents this journey. Free admission.

Said Chrisman, "We have planned these events to make our own witness in this community to the events of Sept. 11. We grieve with those whose loved ones were taken from us and will join in this simple, quiet act of solidarity at the Wilson Chapel. We also seek a new relationship to 9/11, these 10 years being behind us, wishing to conceive actions that promote peace and reconciliation, as for example the two 9/11 widows have done whose story is told in the film screening later Sunday night. I welcome all of you into our circle of solemn contemplation this Sunday."
