Award

Mary Zeiss Stange, professor of women's studies and religion, received a gold medal in the "Best Regional Non-Fiction" category in the 2011 Independent Publisher Book Awards for her book Hard Grass: Life on the Crazy Woman Bison Ranch.  In addition, the book was named a finalist in the "Memoir" category of the 2011 Next Generation Indie Book Awards. 

Activities

Roy H. Ginsberg, professor of government andJean Monnet Chair in European Integration Studies, was a consultant last March through May to the U.S. Department of Stateon the European Union response to the events of the Arab spring, especially the revolutions in Tunisia and Libya. During the summer he presented the findings of his new book on the EU in global security to the Bureau of Intelligence and Research at the State Department. In October he will participate in a State Department-sponsored public diplomacy lecture tour in southern Poland, speaking on transatlantic relations and international security issues at Wroclaw and Krakow universities, among other venues. The lecture tour is organized on the occasion of the Poles' currently holding the presidency of the EU.

The new book, written with Susan Penksa, is in press. It is titled The European Union in Global Security: The Politics of Impact and due in December 2011 from Palgrave Macmillan (London).

Robert Kimmerle, director of community relations, has been named by Mayor Scott Johnsonto a panel of community leaders charged withfinding a location for the Sept. 11 memorial sculpture.

Publications, Exhibitions, Performances

Victor Cahn, professor of English, saw his new play open Sept. 10 in New York City. "Dally with the Devil" is the story of two officials from opposing campaigns who compete to use a powerful blogger and influence the outcome of a Senatorial election. Starring Elizabeth A. Davis, Elizabeth Norment, and Erika Rolfsrud, the play is being performed at Beckett Theatre,  410 W. 42 nd St., through Oct. 8.

Christine Page, associate professor of management and business, is co-author of "Shop when you're happy: Positive feelings improve consumer decision-making abilities, published July 14 in the Journal of Consumer Research. Stories about the study appeared in media worldwide as well as in a report, "Study: Don't go shopping if unhappy," that appeared Aug. 7 in The Sunday Gazette.

Linda Simon, professor of English, is the author of Coco Chanel (Reaktion Books, September 2011).

In the News

Deb Hall, associate professor of art, contributed a special essay titled "Artistic Inspiration in the Columbia River Basin"  to the Portland Oregonian July 17. The essay charted her return to the Columbia plateau, a source of artistic inspiration.

James Kettlewell, professor emeritus of art history, was a source for a story titled "Memory, Interrupted: Controversy delays installation of 9/11 memorial" published Sept. 11 in the Albany Times Union.

Sheldon Solomon, professor of psychology, contributed an invited essay titled "Death," to the Chronicle of Higher Education (Aug. 7, 2011) for a special section titled "An Era in Ideas," marking the 10 th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. In addition, Solomon was featured in a news story titled "Terror attacks frame a vital teaching moment" published Sept. 11 in The Sunday Gazette.

Mary Zeiss Stange, professor of women's studies and religion, was featured in a Billings (Montana) Gazette story about her life on the ranch and her book Hard Grass.

Ángel Pérez ’98, CEO of the National Association for College Admissions Counseling; Jessica Ricker, Skidmore's VP for enrollment and dean of admissions and financial aid; and Janessa Dunn, its director of admissions, spoke to Scope magazine about a changing admissions landscape and how institutions of higher education are grappling.
