Full slate of action as Skidmore teams prep for league play

Goalie Meghan Sleezer '11 in action

Women's soccer posted a pair of 1-0 wins over Farmingdale State and Westfield State to improve to 3-1 overall and win the 2011 Skidmore Invitational this past weekend. Senior Elena Stansky (Worcester, Mass.) scored against Farmingdale and sophomore Jen Wardyga (Barrington, R.I.) scored againstWestfield. Senior goalie Meghan Sleezer (Gloversville, N.Y.) earned the shutout in both games, making a total of 11 saves on the weekend and extending her scoreless streak to 279 minutes. The Thoroughbreds host Plattsburgh at 7 p.m. Friday.

Field hockey improved to 3-0 after earning a 5-2 victory at New Paltz. Senior Annie Rosencrans (Riverside, Conn.) led the way offensively, scoring a career high three goals for No. 7 Skidmore. Seven players recorded a point and freshman Amy Beck (Dayton, Ohio) made three saves to earn the victory in her first collegiate start. The Thoroughbreds host a trio of games this week, opening with Oneonta on at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Volleyball went 2-1 this week at the Rochester Invitational, defeating MCLA and Allegheny before falling to Rochester in the championship. Senior Kelley Vershbow (Washington, D.C.) and junior Carolyn Bottelier (Washington, D.C.) each recorded double-doubles against Allegheny and Rochester and junior Mallory Mendelsohn (San Francisco, Calif.) finished the tournament with 123 assists over three matches. Skidmore is at the Union Invitational on Friday, Sept. 16.

Men's soccer went 2-1 this week, earning wins over New Paltz and Arcadia. In a 1-0 home win over New Paltz, senior Diego Reinero (Princeton, N.J.) scored the lone goal and classmate Nick Peterson (West Hartford, Conn.) made six saves for the shutout. After dropping the opening game of the Red Devil Classic to host Dickinson, Skidmore came back on Sunday with another 1-0 behind a goal from freshman Brock Bakewell (Tuscon, Ariz.) and another shutout from Peterson. The Thoroughbreds open league play Wednesday, Sept. 14, at Bard.

Men's tennis opened its season with a strong showing at the Stony Brook Invite. Competing against three Division I teams, Skidmore had a representative reach the semifinals in four of the six flights. In Flight A singles, sophomore Jimmy Sherpa (West Vancouver, B.C.) lost a hard-fought match in the finals and teamed up with freshman Alec Hoblitzell (Baltimore, Md.) to reach the finals of the Flight A doubles. In Flight B doubles, it was an all-Skidmore final with sophomore Oliver Loutsenko (Bellmore, N.Y.) and junior Alex Fromson (Newton, Mass.) defeating sophomores Danny Knight (Ponte Verda, Fla.) and Gabe Steerman (Philadelphia, Pa.). The Thoroughbreds are at the Middlebury Invite Saturday, Sept. 17.

Women's tennis opened the 2011-12 season at the Williams Invite. On the second day of the event, senior Tory Engros (Bronxville, N.Y.) and sophomores Molly Nolan (Montauk, N.Y.) and Robyn Baird (Potomac, Md.) each won both of their singles matches as Skidmore wrapped up a strong showing. The Thoroughbreds take on league rival Union at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 21 in Schenectady. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
