A terrific week as Thoroughbreds continue win tradition

Men's golf won a pair of tournaments this past week, including taking the Tim Brown Invitational by 19 strokes. On Monday, freshman Zach Grossman (East Hampton, N.Y.) shot a 67-73-140 to finish four-under and earn medalist honors. Skidmore also took fourth through seventh at the event. Over the weekend, junior Anthony DiLisio (Swampscott, Mass.) captured medalist honors with a 72-70-142 to help lead the Thoroughbreds to a 19-stroke victory at the 24-team Duke Nelson Tournament. Skidmore returns to action this weekend at the Liberty League Championship. 

The fifth-ranked field hockey team outscored its opponents 18-4 in three home victories this week. In Wednesday's 5-1 win over Oneonta, senior Lauren Tobias (New City, N.Y.) had two goals and an assist and junior Molly Gile (Dover, N.H.) had a goal and an assist. On Saturday, the Thoroughbreds opened league play with a 7-3 win over Rensselaer highlighted by sophomore Kelly Blackhurst (North River, N.Y.) tying a program record with 10 points, scoring four goals and dishing out two assists. On Sunday, Skidmore shut out Nazareth 6-0 behind a pair of goals from junior Ceilidh MacNeill (Framingham, Mass.). Freshman Haley McDougall (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) started all three games in goal and improved to 5-0 on the year. The Thoroughbreds improve to 6-0 overall and have now won 22 straight home games; they host William Smith Friday in Liberty League play.

Women's soccer earned a pair of shutout victories this week, totaling four straight wins on the season. On Friday night, sophomore Christine Bellotti (Medfield, Mass.) scored a goal and senior Meghan Sleezer (Gloversville, N.Y.) made five saves as Skidmore blanked Plattsburgh 1-0. On Saturday, seniors Elena Stansky (Worcester, Mass.) and Abby Benton (Vergennes, Vt.) and juniors Michelle Finan (Richmond, Vt.) and Kelsey Yam (Longmeadow, Mass.) all scored in the 4-0 win at Manhattanville. The Thoroughbreds are now 5-1 and open league play Wednesday, Sept. 21, when they host nationally ranked Union.

Volleyball went 3-1 at the Union Invitational this past weekend. Skidmore dropped its first match to Cortland and came back to pick up wins over Oswego, Hartwick, and Sage. Sophomore Corinne Palmer (Montvale, N.J.) was named to the All-Tournament Team after finishing the tournament with 43 kills and 16 blocks. Skidmore opens Liberty League play at home against Union College at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23.

Men's soccer went 1-1 this week, highlighted by Wednesday night's overtime win at Bard in which freshman Gordon Bray (New Canaan, Conn.) headed home a corner from senior Diego Reinero (Princeton, N.J.) for his first collegiate goal. On Saturday, the Thoroughbreds dropped a tough 2-0 decision to undefeated Plattsburgh. Skidmore hosts Cazenovia at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20.

Men's tennis competed at the Middlebury Invitational this past weekend. Sophomore Jimmy Sherpa (West Vancouver, B.C.) and freshman Alec Hoblitzell (Baltimore, Md.) reached the semifinals of the A Flight Doubles and freshman Miles Ransom (Delray Beach, Fla.) reached the semifinals of the C Flight Singles. The Thoroughbreds host the ITA Regionals Friday, September 30. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
