Men's tennis shines at ITA regionals

Men's tennis had a strong showing at the ITA Northeast Regional this past weekend. In the singles bracket, all six Thoroughbreds advanced to the round of 16. The highlight was sophomore Oliver Loutsenko (Bellmore, N.Y.) reaching the championship match before falling to Yevgeny Perepelov of Hunter. In doubles, the pair of sophomore Jimmy Sherpa (West Vancouver, British Columbia) and freshman Alec Hoblitzell (Baltimore, Md.) also reached the championship match, falling to Ben and Andrew Guzick of Vassar. Skidmore is at Bates this weekend for the Wallach Invite.  

Women's tennis dominated in its lone match of the week, defeating Bard 9-0. Sophomore Robyn Baird (Potomac, Md.) and freshmen Alex Smith (Beverly Hills, Calif.), Zoe Valella (Weston, Conn.) and Yumi Karlshoej (West Vancouver, British Columbia) all posted 2-0 records, winning at singles and doubles. They are now 2-0 on the year and travel Saturday, Oct. 8, to William Smith for the Gail Smith doubles tournament.

The third-ranked field hockey team went 1-1 this week, dropping its first game of the season at No. 12 Middlebury. Against the Panthers, senior Caylyn Sullivian (Dedham, Mass.) scored the lone goal for Skidmore and freshman Haley McDougall finished with 10 saves. In Friday's 2-1 victory at Williams, freshman Sam Skott (Buskirk, N.Y.) scored the winning goal with no time remaining. Sophomore Kelly Blackhurst (North River, N.Y.) also scored and was credited with an assist on the game-winner. The Thoroughbreds are now 9-1 overall and resume play Oct. 8 at St. Lawrence.

Women's soccer went 1-1 on the week, falling to No. 2 William Smith and winning at RIT. Against RIT, senior Elena Stansky (Worcester, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal and classmate Meghan Sleezer (Gloversville, N.Y.) finished with 10 saves. Sleezer also recorded 10 saves against William Smith. Skidmore is 7-3 overall and 2-2 in league play on the season; the team hosts Vassar at 2 p.m. Oct. 8.

Volleyball went 2-3 on the week, including a 2-2 record in league play. Junior Carolyn Bottelier (Washington, D.C.) had a strong week, highlighted by a triple double with 12 kills, 26 assists and 14 digs against St. Lawrence. Against Bard, freshman Brittany Dingler (Simsbury, Conn.) had seven aces, while junior Mallory Mendelsohn (San Francisco, Calif.) finished with 21 assist and 20 digs. The Thoroughbreds return to action Tuesday at Union.

Men's soccer went 0-2 this week, dropping a pair of 1-0 games to No. 18 Hobart and RIT. Senior goalie Nick Peterson (West Hartford, Conn.) got the start in both games, totaling seven saves on the weekend. Skidmore is now 4-7 overall and 1-3 in the league; the team hosts Southern Vermont at 4 p.m. Tuesday. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
