Eyeing postseason, Thoroughbreds complete impressive week

Volleyball went 4-1 on the week, giving head coach Hilda Arrechea her 400 th career victory. The Thoroughbreds suffered a 3-1 loss in league play at Union Tuesday before posting a perfect 4-0 record en route to winning the Union Interleague Championship. On Friday, junior Mallory Mendelsohn (San Francisco, Calif.) posted 50 assists to help beat Hartwick and Lasell, while on Saturday, junior Carolyn Bottelier(Washington, D.C.) had a pair of double-doubles in victories over Oneonta and Kean. Skidmore is 15-7 on the year and returns to action Tuesday, Oct. 11, at Middlebury.

Women's soccer earned a pair of shutout victories in Liberty League play this weekend. On Saturday, junior Kelsey Yam (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored and senior Meghan Sleezer (Gloversville, N.Y.) made two saves to earn her sixth shutout of the season in a 1-0 win over Vassar. In Sunday's 2-0 victory over Bard, freshman Morgan Governale (Setauket, N.Y.) and senior Elena Stansky (Worcester, Mass.) scored and sophomore Gab Lawrence (Yorktown, N.Y.) earned the shutout in goal. The Thoroughbreds are now 9-3 overall and 4-2 in conference play. They host Middlebury at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, in their regular-season home finale.

The fifth-ranked field hockey team clinched a berth in the Liberty League Tournament with Saturday's 2-0 win at St. Lawrence. Sophomore Kelly Blackhurst (North River, N.Y.) and junior Ceilidh MacNeill (Framingham, Mass.) scored for Skidmore, while freshman goalie Haley McDougall (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) made four saves for her fifth shutout of the season. The Thoroughbreds are 10-1 overall and 4-0 in league play. They host Utica at 4 p.m. Oct. 12.

Men's soccer went 1-0-1 this week, defeating Southern Vermont 4-3 in overtime and tying Vassar, 0-0. In the Southern Vermont contest, senior Diego Reinero (Princeton, N.J.) scored the game-winner, while freshman Brock Bakewell (Tuscon, Ariz.) had two goals and senior Pat Wildes (Hamden, Conn.) also scored. Senior Nick Peterson (West Hartford, Conn.) made seven saves on the week, including five in the 0-0 tie at Vassar. Skidmore is 5-7-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the league and heads to Oneonta for a 4 p.m. start Oct. 12.

Women's tennis traveled to Middlebury for the Gail Smith Doubles Tournament. The freshmen duo of Yumi Karlshoej (West Vancouver, B.C.) and Zoe Valella (Weston, Conn.) won their flight and reached the quarterfinals before losing to the eventual champions. Senior Tory Engros (Bronxville, N.Y.) and sophomore Molly Nolan (Montauk, N.Y.) paired up to post a 4-0 record on the weekend. The Thoroughbreds return to action Friday at the NYS Tournament in Rochester.

Men's tennis competed in the Wallach Invitational this past weekend at Bates. Freshman Miles Ransom (Delray Beach, Fla.) won the C Singles flight, while sophomore Oliver Loutsenko (Bellmore, N.Y.) reached the finals of the A Singles flight. In doubles action, sophomore Jimmy Sherpa (West Vancouver, B.C.) and freshman Alec Hoblitzell (Baltimore, Md.) lost a hard-fought match, 9-8 (13-11) in the A Doubles final.
