Women's tennis shows depth in championship matches

Women's tennis junior Nataly Mendoza (San Francisco, Calif.) and sophomore Lee Ford (Newton, Mass.) finished fourth at the USTA/ITA Small College doubles championships. The pair upset second-seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps before falling to eventual champion Emory in the semifinals. The Thoroughbreds also competed at the NYS Championship, reaching eight of the nine finals and winning five. Senior Tory Engros (Bronxville, N.Y.) and freshmen Alex Smith (Beverly Hills, Calif.) and Zoe Valella (Weston, Conn.) all won at singles. In doubles action, Smith and sophomore Robyn Baird (Potomac, Md.) won at number-two doubles and sophomore Melissa Hirsch (Alamo, Calif.) and Yumi Karlshoej (West Vancouver, B.C) teamed up to win at number-three doubles. 

The fifth-ranked field hockey team extended its home winning streak to 26 games with a pair of victories against Utica and Wheaton. Sophomore Kelly Blackhurst (North River, N.Y.) finished the weekend with three goals and an assist, while senior Annie Rosencrans (Riverside, Conn.) had two goals and three assists, and freshman Sam Skott (Buskirk, N.Y.) added two goals. The Thoroughbreds are 12-1 overall and take on local rival Union on Friday, Oct. 21.

Volleyball posted a 3-1 record this week, going a perfect 3-0 in Liberty League play. In league action, junior Mallory Mendelsohn (San Francisco, Calif.) tallied 85 assists, while classmate Carolyn Bottelier (Washington, D.C.) finished with 22 kills and 39 digs and senior Kelley Vershbow (Washington, D.C.) had a team-high 32 kills. Skidmore is 18-8 overall and 6-3 in league play. This Friday, the team will take on RIT at Union.

Women's soccer went 1-1 on the week, dropping a 1-0 game to Middlebury before coming back to pick up a 5-0 win at Utica. Junior Kelsey Yam (Longmeadow, Mass.) had two goals, while senior Abby Benton (Vergennes, Vt.) had a goal and an assist. Senior Katie Rasche (York, Maine) and junior Sarah LaBella (Malta, N.Y.) also scored for the Thoroughbreds. They improved to 10-4 and return to action Saturday, Oct. 22, at Clarkson.

Men's soccer went 0-2 on the week, suffering a 2-1 overtime loss at Oneonta and a 1-0 loss to Utica. Senior Diego Reinero (Princeton, N.J.) scored at Oneonta and classmate Nick Peterson (West Hartford, Conn.) totaled eight saves on the week. Skidmore is 5-9-1 and hosts RPI at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19.

Golf finished 11 th at the Golfweek Division III Invitational in Miramir Beach, Fla. Junior Anthony DiLisio (Swampscott, Mass.) was the top finisher for the Thoroughbreds, shooting a three-over 75-74-67-216 to finish fifth overall. Skidmore resumed play Monday, Oct. 17, at the Manhattanville/NYU Invitational. ~ Cody Berschwinger
