Activities

Dan Forbush, executive director of communications, moderated a panel discussion hosted Oct. 27 by the Saratoga Film Forum. Panelists were Barbara Lombardo, managing editor of The Saratogian, Rex Smith, editor and vice president of The Times Union, and Jeff Goodell, a contributing editor at Rolling Stone. The discussion followed a screening of Page One: A Year Inside The New York Times. 

Margaret Pearson, professor emerita of history, was at the Book House in Albany Oct. 27, where she discussed her translation of The Original I Ching.

Jeff Segrave, David H. Porter Professor, Department of Health and Exercise Science, served as presiding professor at the International Olympic Academy (Olympia, Greece) for the week of Sept. 11-18, where he delivered a series of lectures and organized workshops and case studies with two other visiting professors. His lectures were titled "Coubertin's ideology of beauty," "Pivotal games in the modern Olympic era," "The Olympic opening ceremonies: From sacred to secular," "The Paralympics: A brief history," and "Drugs and the Olympics."

Mary Zeiss Stange, professor of women's studies and religion, was in Rome the week of Oct. 10-16, where she attended a conference at the Vatican on "Religion, Nature and Art" jointly sponsored by the International Society for the Study of Religion, Nature and Culture and the Vatican Ethnological Museum. Stange presented a conference paper titled "Tracking the 'Whole Lot:' Aboriginal and Bushmen Hunting, Art, and the Re-enchantment of the World." While there she also had the opportunity to do some research at the Vatican Museums.

Publications

Denise Brooks McQuade, senior teaching associate in biology, is the author of a commentatry titled "Does digit ratio (2D:4D) predict penile length?" published in Asian Journal of Andrology, Vol. 13, No. 5, September 2011. Following publication of the commentary, which accompanied an article on original research in the same edition, McQuade's analysis was featured in media both in the U.S. and abroad, including the following: The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Tribune, the Calgary Herald, Inside Higher Ed, CBSNews.com, the Baltimore Sun, and Reuters.

Linda Simon, professor of English, is the author of an essay on Coco Chanel published in The Montreal Review, October 2011.

Roy H. Ginsberg is the author of a Letter to the Editor of The New York Times on the subject of the Polish elections, published Oct. 14 online.
