Fall athletes end season as winter teams debut

Men's and women's basketball open their 2011-2012 season on Tuesday night at home. The women play host to Sage at 6 p.m. and the men take on Cobleskill at 8 p.m. Prior to the men's game the 2010-11 Liberty League champions banner will be unveiled.

In weekend action, women's soccer won its first NCAA tournament game in school history, defeating MIT in penalty kicks on Saturday before falling to No. 1 Messiah Sunday afternoon. Against MIT, senior Meghan Sleezer (Gloversville, N.Y.) recorded nine saves and turned away all three shots she faced in the penalty kicks. Skidmore ended its season with 13-7-1 record.

Volleyball earned a dramatic come-from-behind victory in the first round of its NCAA tournament, defeating Rivier 3-2. Senior Kelley Vershbow (Washington, D.C.) had 27 kills, while junior Mallory Mendelsohn (San Francisco, Calif.) recorded 52 assists and classmate Sam Friedman (Los Angeles, Calif.) posted 31 digs. The Thoroughbreds fell in the second round to Middlebury and ended their season with a 28-9 record.

Field hockey suffered a 2-0 loss to Amherst in the second round of their NCAA tournament. Freshman goalie Haley McDougall made eight saves for the Thoroughbreds, who wrapped up their 2011 season with an 18-2 overall record.

Men's and women's swimming and diving suffered losses Saturday to Division II St. Rose. Senior diver Doug Pilawa (Chardon, Ohio) won the 1-meter and 3-meter dives, remaining unbeaten on the season, recording NCAA qualifying scores in both events. On the women's side, junior diver Kristen Stearns (Torrington, Conn.) swept the diving events, setting a new college record in the 1-meter. Freshman Catherine King (Wellesley, Mass.) was also a double winner, taking first in the 50 free and 100 free. Both teams travel to Utica Saturday, Nov. 19.

Ice hockey suffered a pair of road losses to St. Anselm and New England College. Against St. Anselm, freshman David Limoges (Saint-Hippolyte, Quebec) scored and senior Colin Bessey (Montclair, N.J.) finished with 30 saves. At NEC, sophomore Tony Giacin (St. Louis, Mo.) had two goals and an assist, while Bessey turned away 29 shots. The Thoroughbreds are 1-3 on the season and host ECAC East opponent UMass-Boston at 7 p.m. Friday. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
