Student music concerts celebrate end of semester

The Skidmore Department of Music will present a variety of student concerts celebrating a semester of hard work starting Thursday, Dec. 1, through Wednesday, Dec. 7. All events are in the Arthur Zankel Music Center, Helen Filene Ladd Concert Hall. Admission is free to every event.

 

Skidmore Guitar Ensemble, Thursday, Dec. 1, at 8 p.m.

The Skidmore Guitar Ensemble is an auditioned ensemble devoted to the performance of classical guitar music in combination with other instruments and voice. Joel Brown, coach of the ensemble, is an accomplished performer as both a guitar soloist and a chamber musician as well as a member of the band Triple Play.

Skidmore Small Jazz Ensembles, Saturday, Dec. 3, at 2 p.m.

Under the coaching of Artists-in-Residence John Nazarenko, Mark Vinci, and George Muscatello, students in the Skidmore Small Jazz Ensembles will perform Dec. 3. These student ensembles perform on and off campus for various events, including shows at Caffe Lena, Falstaff's, and Virgil's Coffee House. The combos also participate in coaching and master classes by guest artists such as The Bad Plus, Eric Harland, and Chris Potter. Repertoire is largely decided by the students and includes jazz, Latin, funk, and rock-based music.

Skidmore Wind Symphony and Chamber Ensembles, Sunday, Dec. 4, at 3 p.m.

In her first semester at Skidmore, Diane Bargiel creates the Skidmore Wind Symphony and Chamber Ensembles and will conduct their inaugural performance Dec. 4. Jan Vinci serves as the Chamber Ensemble Coordinator for this exciting new group.

World Premiere of Skidmore Student Compositions, Sunday, Dec. 4, at 8 p.m.

Students of Anthony G. Holland will present a culmination of their semester-long journey composing new work. These world-premiere compositions feature a wide variety of styles and works resulting in an extravaganza of new student written music.

Skidmore Big Band Concert, Monday, Dec. 5, at 8 p.m.

The Skidmore Big Band is directed by Mark Vinci and offers students the opportunity to perform in a large jazz group. This auditioned group, which includes as many as 25 members, will perform their end-of-semester concert Dec. 5.

Skidmore String Ensembles, Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 8 p.m.

Coached by Josh Rodriguez and Amanda Brin, the Skidmore String Ensembles feature talent string students who will present selections from the classic string music literature.
