Winter teams find success in short week
Ice hockey went 1-1 last weekend, finishing as the runner-up in the 2011 Skidmore Invitational. In the opener, sophomore Tony Giacin (St. Louis, Mo.) posted a career-high four goals and senior Alex Essaris (Dollard-Des-Ormaux, Quebec) added three assists as 14 different players recorded a point in the Thoroughbreds' 8-2 win over Nichols. In Sunday's championship game, Skidmore dropped a tough 4-3 decision to Hamilton. Senior Nick Dupuis (Holyoke, Mass.) had a goal and an assist against the Continentals. Giacin and Essaris were named to the All-Tournament Team. The Thoroughbreds are now 3-5 on the season and resume play on Friday at St. Michael's.
Women's basketball improved to 4-0 with a 42-29 victory at Hamilton. Senior Jessie Kavana (Mahopac, N.Y.) led Skidmore with 11 points, while classmate Christina Gargiso (Staten Island, N.Y.) and sophomore Jordyn Wartts (St. Louis, Mo.) chipped in with 10 each. The Thoroughbreds return to action at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, when they host Williams.
The men's basketball team ran its record to 3-0 with a 62-52 non-league win over SUNY Oneonta Wednesday night at the Williamson Sports Center. The Thoroughbreds never trailed and led by as many as 20 in the second half. Senior Brian Lowry scored a game-high 15 points to go along with eight rebounds for Skidmore. Gerard O'Shea, also a senior, contributed 13 points and three assists.
Men's basketball moved to 2-0 after a 91-57 victory over Southern Vermont in the highly-anticipated Thanksgiving-week rematch of the teams, who made NCAA basketball history in their 2010 meeting. Senior Terron Victoria (Albany, N.Y.) led a balanced scoring attack with 14 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists. Seniors Brian Lowry (West Hartford, Conn.), Melvis Langyintuo (Tamale, Ghana) and Raoul Oloa (Yaounde, Cameroon) all scored in double figures. Skidmore hits the road Saturday, Dec. 3, to play William Patterson. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
