Basketball teams close out semester

Women's basketball went 1-1, falling to No. 11 Williams before closing the calendar year with a 64-51 win over Middlebury. Senior Megan Gaugler (Amsterdam, N.Y.) led all scorers with 12, while classmate Christina Gargiso (Staten Island, N.Y.) added nine points and 10 rebounds against Williams. In the Middlebury contest, Gaugler scored a game-high 25 and junior Logan Frederick

(Arlington, Va.) had 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting while pulling down six rebounds. Skidmore is 5-1 on the season and returns to action on New Year's Day, taking on Western Connecticut State in the Springfield Holiday Inn Tournament.

Men's basketball also went 1-1, earning a 108-99 overtime win at Castleton before falling to No. 1 Middlebury, 64-59. At Castleton, senior Brian Lowry (West Hartford, Conn.) led five players in double-figures with 19 points, while freshman Connor Merrill (Panton, Vt.) and senior John Mantas (Niskayuna, N.Y.) came off the bench to score 17 and 16, respectively. Against Middlebury, Lowry had a team-high 13 points, while seniors Terron Victoria (Albany, N.Y.) and Gerard O'Shea (West Sand Lake, N.Y.) had 12 points each. The Thoroughbreds are now 4-2 and will resume play Thursday, Dec. 29, against U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in the D3hoops.com classic in Las Vegas. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
