Basketball teams continue winning ways

Men's basketball opened league play with a pair of victories over Vassar and RIT. Against Vassar, senior Gerard O'Shea (West Sand Lake, N.Y.) tied a 30-year-old school record with eight steals, while classmates Brian Lowry (West Hartford, Conn.) and John Mantas (Niskayuna, N.Y.) each scored 13 points. In the RIT victory, Lowry scored a game-high 16 and senior Melvis Langyintuo (Tamale, Ghana) finished with 11 points and four blocks. Skidmore improved to 8-2 overall and hosts Bard in Liberty League action at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13.

Women's basketball improved to 8-2 overall with a pair of 16-point victories over Liberty League opponents Vassar and RIT. Senior Christina Gargiso (Staten Island, N.Y.) had 11 points, nine rebounds, and six assists against Vassar, while classmate Megan Gaugler (Amsterdam, N.Y.) had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Jessie Kavana (Mahopac, N.Y.) finished with 13 points. Against RIT, Gargiso scored 20 points and Gaugler recorded another double double with 15 points and 10 rebounds to go along with four blocks. The Thoroughbreds return to action Friday, when they host Bard for a 6 p.m. tip. 

Ice hockey dropped a pair of road contests to Postdam and No. 3 Plattsburgh. Against Potsdam, seniors Alex Essaris (Dollard-Des-Ormaux, Quebec) and Nick Dupuis (Holyoke, Mass.), along with freshmen Erik Nilsson (Stockholm, Sweden) and Tim Colvin (Brunswick, Ohio), scored. At Plattsburgh, sophomore Brad Schuler (Delran, N.J.) scored a pair of goals and classmate Vlad Gavrik (Kharkiv, Ukraine) had a goal and two assists. Skidmore is 4-9-1 and hosts Williams in a non-league matchup at 7 p.m. Friday. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
