Athletes in the thick of winter action

Ice hockey earned a 1-1 tie against No. 11 Williams in its only contest of the past week. Freshman David Limoges (Saint-Hippolyte, Quebec) scored the lone goal for the Thoroughbreds and freshman Spencer Sodokoff(Greenwich, CT) made 23 saves in goal in his first collegiate start. Skidmore is 4-9-2 on the season and returns to action Friday, Jan. 20, at University of New England.

Men's basketball went 1-1 in a pair of Liberty League contests. Last Friday, Skidmore dropped Bard, 73-56 behind a game-high 17 points and eight rebounds from senior Melvis Langyintuo (Tamale, Ghana).   Seniors Gerard O'Shea (West Sand Lake, N.Y.), Terron Victoria (Albany, N.Y.) and John Mantas (Niskayuna, N.Y.) all were in double figures in scoring. The Thoroughbreds suffered an 88-85 loss at RPI despite 21 points from Langyintuo and 20 from Victoria. Entering this week, the team is 9-3 overall and 3-1 in league play this season.

Women's basketball defeated Bard and lost at RPI during a 1-1 week. Against Bard, 11 different players scored, led by 14 from senior Christina Gargiso (Staten Island, N.Y.). The Skidmore bench finished with 35 points; freshman Angela Botiba (Douala, Cameroon) was the leader with nine. At RPI, Gargiso had a team-high 15 points and classmate Jessie Kavana (Mahopac, N.Y.) added 11.   At the start of this week, the women's team was 9-3 overall and 3-1 in league play.

Men's and women's swimming and diving teams returned to action last week. The men traveled last Saturday to RPI for the Kumpf Invitational and to Oneonta for a dual meet last Monday. Senior diver Doug Pilawa (Chardon, Ohio) won the 1-meter dive at RPI and came back on Monday to win the 1-meter and 3-meter dives at Oneonta. On the women's side, freshman Catherine King (Wellesley, Mass.) won the 50 Free and 100 Free and junior Carrie Koch (Wellesley, Mass.) was also a double-winner, taking first in the 500 Free and 200 Free. The women return to action on Saturday, Jan. 21, at the RPI Invite, while both teams host Hartwick this Sunday. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
