Winter teams prep for stretch run

Ice hockey posted a 2-0 record this week, picking up home victories over New England College and Saint Anselm. Against NEC, junior Brendan Cottam (Belmont, Mass.) had two goals and an assist to go along with a goal and an assist each from senior Jack Walsh (North Reading, Mass.) and junior Zack Menard (Burlington, Mass.). In the win over Saint Anselm, senior Nick Dupuis (Holyoke, Mass.) finished with a goal and an assist, while senior Colin Bessey (Montclair, N.J.) posted his second win of the weekend, making 23 saves on Saturday after turning away 25 shots on Friday night. Skidmore improved to 7-10-2 overall and 6-6 in league play after the weekend sweep and returns to action Friday at Babson.
Senior diver Doug Pilawa (Chardon, Ohio) broke his own school record in the 3-meter dive for the second consecutive week en route to another diving sweep in the Thoroughbreds dual meet against RPI. Junior diver Kristen Stearns (Torrington, Conn.) completed the diving sweep with wins in the 3-meter and 1-meter on the women's side, while freshman Catherine King (Wellesley, Mass.) was a double winner in the 50 Free and 100 Free and junior Carrie Koch (Wellesley, Mass.) placed first in the 1000 Free. For the men, freshman Nick Sauerbrunn (Avon, Conn.) picked up a win in the 500 Free. The women host the Skidmore Invite this weekend, while the men travel to the Vassar Invite.

Women's basketball senior Megan Gaugler (Amsterdam, N.Y.) became the 12 th player in program history to record 1,000 career points during a challenging week for the Thoroughbreds. In Tuesday's OT loss against St. Lawrence, senior Jessie Kavana (Mahopac, N.Y.) had a game-high 14 points and junior Logan Frederick (Arlington, Va.) recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. On Friday night, Gaugler reached the milestone as Skidmore rallied from a 17-point deficit to force overtime but came up short as senior Christina Gargiso (Staten Island, N.Y.) led the way with a team-high 21 points against Union. In Saturday's 64-61 loss to William Smith, Gargiso had a game-high 18 points, while Gaugler finished with a double-double, tallying 15 points and 10 rebounds. The Thoroughbreds are now 11-6 overall, 4-4 in league play and take on Vassar at 6 p.m. Friday.
Men's basketball finished the week at 1-2, defeating St. Lawrence before dropping back-to-back games to Union and Hobart. Against St. Lawrence, seniors Terron Victoria (Albany, N.Y.), Brian Lowry (West Hartford, Conn.), and John Mantas (Niskayuna, N.Y.) each finished with 12 points to lead the balanced attack. At Union, senior Melvis Langyintuo (Tamale, Ghana) led Skidmore with 15 points and freshman Connor Merrill (Panton, Vt.) added 13 off the bench. In Saturday's matchup with Hobart, Victoria had 16 points, six rebounds and four steals, while Merrill contributed five points, five rebounds, and five blocks. The Thoroughbreds fell to 11-6 overall and 5-3 in league action. They travel Friday to Vassar for an 8 p.m. tip. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
