Ice hockey sweeps in weekend action

Ice hockey went 2-0 on the week highlighted by a 3-2 victory over No. 1 Norwich Friday night. Senior Colin Bessey (Montclair, N.J.) made 38 saves while junior Julian Malakorn (Warwick, R.I.) and seniors Tyler Doremus (Aspen, Colo.) and Jack Walsh (North Reading, Mass.) all scored. On Saturday, Skidmore cruised to a 9-1 win over St. Michael's behind two goals and two assists from sophomore Tony Giacin (St. Louis, Mo.) and 14 saves from Bessey. Malakorn and senior Nick Dupuis (Holyoke, Mass.) finished with three assists apiece. The Thoroughbreds improve to 10-11-12 and 9-7 in ECAC East play. They wrap up the regular season with a pair of home-and-home games this coming weekend against Castleton. 

Women's basketball posted a 2-1 record last week, earning league victories over Clarkson and William Smith before falling to RIT on Saturday. Against Clarkson, senior Christina Gargiso (Staten Island, N.Y.) paced a balanced attack with 11 points and 11 rebounds while classmates Jessie Kavana (Mahopac, N.Y.) and Megan Gaugler (Amsterdam, N.Y.) added 10 points each. In a 60-53 overtime win at William Smith, Gaugler scored a game-high 18 points and freshman Angela Botiba (Douala, Cameroon) tallied 12 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks. Against RIT, Gargiso finished with a team-high 13 and Gaugler added 12. Skidmore is 14-8 overall, 7-6 in league action and travels to St. Lawrence for a 6 p.m. tip Tuesday, Feb. 14.

Men's basketball went 1-2 on the week, picking up a win over Clarkson at home before dropping a pair of road games to Hobart and RIT. Senior John Mantas (Niskayuna, N.Y.) finished with 12 points, while classmate Gerard O'Shea (West Sand Lake, N.Y.) had a team-high 15 points to go along with six assists in the Clarkson win. Against Hobart, senior Terron Victoria (Albany, N.Y.) had a team-high 11 points and Mantas added 10 off the bench. In Saturday's loss at RIT, O'Shea scored 22 points and senior Melvis Langyintuo (Tamale, Ghana) chipped in with 14 points. The Thoroughbreds are 14-8 overall and 8-5 in league play. They travel to St. Lawrence for an 8 p.m. start Tuesday.

Men's swimming & diving took second at the Vassar Sprint Invite on Saturday. Senior diver Doug Pilawa (Chardon, Ohio) earned another sweep, taking first in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives, while classmate Sam Leibenhaut (Valley Stream, N.Y.), sophomore Tim Brodsky (Auburn, Maine) and freshmen Lyle Stephenson (Ellsworth, Mass.) and Nick Sauerbrunn (Avon, Conn.) all picked up individual wins. They return to action Wednesday, Feb. 22, at the UNYSCSA Championships in Rochester. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
